Dr. Sumita B. Mitra obtained B.Sc. (Chemistry hons) from Presidency College and M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Kolkata. She received her Ph.D. in Organic/Polymer Chemistry from University of Michigan, USA. After a year of postdoctoral work at Case Western Reserve University, she joined 3M Corporate Research Laboratories in 1978 and later moved to 3M Dental Products Division (now 3M Oral Care) in 1983. She held positions of increasing responsibility and, in 1998, was appointed Corporate Scientist. She led the new materials/products research and development efforts there until her retirement in 2010. From 1999-2010 she also served as the Industrial Director of the Minnesota Dental Research Center of Biomaterials and Biomechanics at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Mitra is a Partner at Mitra Chemical Consulting LLC, an independent consulting firm she founded. She is a Professor at the University of South Florida at the Institute of Advanced Discovery and Innovation. Dr. Mitra is the creator and inventor of many new materials technologies and the developer of several new product segments for the dental and orthodontic market including resin-modified glass ionomers, nanocomposites and adhesives that have been translated into the development and commercialization of numerous novel and innovative products for the dental practice. (Ex: Filtek Supreme products, Vitrebond, Vitremer, Scotchbond Multipurpose, RelyX Luting Cement, APC Bracket Adhesive etc.). The Filtek products have been used to restore over one billion teeth globally. She is the recipient of 100 US patents and their corresponding OUS equivalents and has numerous publications (100+) in the areas of polymer science and dental materials, including 12 chapters in 9 books. Dr. Mitra has received numerous honors and awards among which are:
