Louis B Rosenberg: Innovator in Immersive Computing, AI, Collective Intelligence, and Haptics

Louis B Rosenberg (PhD, Stanford University) is a prolific inventor in the fields of human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. With an impressive portfolio of 259 U.S. patents, he is best known for his groundbreaking work in virtual reality, haptics, artificial intelligence, collective intelligence, and augmented reality. Rosenberg began his career as a researcher at Stanford, NASA, and Air Force Research Laboratory. He then founded a number of successful companies including Immersion Corporation, Outland Research, and Unanimous AI.

Early Career:

Rosenberg's early work at Stanford, NASA and the U.S. Air Force resulted in the first interactive augmented reality system. Known as the Virtual Fixtures platform (1991-1994), it was developed at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and enabled users to engage real and virtual objects in the same environment for the first time. Rosenberg then founded Immersion Corporation where he developed a wide range of computing technologies for virtual reality, medical training, consumer gaming, automotive, and industrial markets. Rosenberg then founded Outland Research to develop mobile computing, spatial media, and augmented reality technologies.

Current Career:

Rosenberg has been the CEO and Chief Scientist of Unanimous AI since 2014. The company has pioneered the use of AI to amplify the intelligence of networked human groups. The core technology developed by Rosenberg is called Artificial Swarm Intelligence (ASI) because it is modeled on the collective intelligence capabilities of biological swarms. It has been used by a wide range of organizations from the US Air Force to the United Nations. In recent years he developed a next generation technology called Conversational Swarm Intelligence (CSI) and enables very large human groups to hold real-time conversations with amplified collective intelligence.

Career Highlights:

Rosenberg began his career as an early pioneer of the field of augmented reality. He developed the first interactive AR system in the early 1990's at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. In the early 2000's he pioneered the development of augmented reality media players, spatially associated notes and reminders, and other spatial and geospatial technologies. In the field of haptics he is an inventor of the first haptic computer mouse, haptic joystick, and haptic touchscreen for consumer markets, and inventor of the first haptic web pages and haptic GUI interfaces. In the fields of AI and collective intelligence, Rosenberg pioneered two core technologies, Artificial Swarm Intelligence (ASI) and Conversational Swarm Intelligence (CSI), for amplifying the combined cognitive abilities of networked human groups. His most recent work as a computer scientist aims to achieve "Collective Superintelligence" by using AI to enable very large human groups to efficiently solve problems as real-time networked systems.
