Ali Ghodsi didn’t set out to be Silicon Valley royalty, he just wanted to make data behave.
Born in Iran, raised in Sweden, and later a PhD computer scientist at KTH, he landed at UC Berkeley’s AMPLab, where he and a band of researchers built Apache Spark.
Spark caught fire, but companies burned out trying to use it. So in 2013, Ghodsi co-founded Databricks, wrapping Spark in enterprise-friendly packaging. As CEO, he championed the lakehouse, a place where data lakes and warehouses stop fighting over who does the dishes. Today, Databricks is worth billions, and Ghodsi is proof that geeks can, indeed, rule the cloud.
