Adam Cheyer: The Quiet Architect Behind the Voice in Your Pocket

Adam Cheyer isn’t the type to chase the spotlight. But if you’ve ever barked a command into your phone and had it respond with something eerily useful, chances are you’ve felt his influence. A deeply thoughtful engineer with the instincts of an entrepreneur, Cheyer has been quietly wiring the future of human-computer interaction for over two decades.

Currently the Vice President of AI Experience at Airbnb, Cheyer is shaping how AI weaves itself into the fabric of everyday travel. But long before machine learning became cocktail party fodder, Cheyer was already a name among insiders, a founding member of Siri. This virtual assistant has changed how we interact with our devices. When Apple acquired Siri in 2010, it wasn’t just buying software. It was acquiring Cheyer’s vision for an interface that listens, learns, and helps.

Siri wasn’t his only moonshot. He co-founded Viv Labs, a platform designed to take conversational AI even further, which was eventually acquired by Samsung to power its voice assistant ambitions. He has also had his fingerprints on Change.org (amplifying civic engagement), Sentient (pushing the limits of distributed machine learning), and GamePlanner.AI (acquired by Airbnb, which blends AI with decision-making).

Earlier in his career, Cheyer served as VP of Engineering at both Verticalnet and Dejima. However, it was at SRI International, where he served as Chief Architect of the ambitious CALO/PAL project—the largest government-funded AI initiative in U.S. history, that he laid the intellectual foundation for Siri and beyond.

Cheyer’s work spans more than 60 publications and 52 patents. A Brandeis graduate with highest honors and an “Outstanding Masters Student” award from UCLA, he’s an inventor who doesn’t just dream up the future, he builds it.

In a tech world obsessed with quick wins and viral launches, Adam Cheyer is playing a longer game: one where the machines don’t just compute, they understand.
