Dr. Thorsten Siess joined Abiomed in 2005 upon its acquisition of Impella CardioSystems, AG, which he co-founded in 1998 and has served as manager of R&D, then chief technology officer.
During his time at the University of Aachen, he developed the Impella® technology which serves as a platform for the entire Impella product portfolio.
Prior to founding Impella, Dr. Siess served as a scientist in the biomedical technology team at the Helmholtz Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Aachen. Dr. Siess received a Ph.D. as well as his MASc in mechanical engineering from the University of Aachen.
Patent №: 11781550 (October 10, 2023) – Blood pump with micromotor.
This patent features a stator containing a back iron jacket. This jacket, made from a unique metal alloy consisting of ferritic iron as the primary constituent, up to 30% chromium, and preferably aluminum and yttrium oxide, significantly reduces electric conductivity. By suppressing eddy currents, this inventive design enhances the electrical output of the motor, despite its small diameter.

Patent №: 11785860 (October 10, 2023) – Top electrode for a memory device and methods of making such a memory device.
This device has a memory cell placed in a layer of insulating material. The memory cell includes a bottom electrode, a memory state material, and an internal sidewall spacer in the opening. Inside the spacer opening, there’s a top electrode.
Patent №: 11780291 (October 10, 2023) – Vehicle air conditioner drip valve diagnostics.
This invention comprises a system and method that detects malfunctions in vehicle air conditioners (A/C). By employing image comparison techniques, the system determines the presence or absence of condensate from the A/C unit, allowing for prompt identification of a malfunctioning drip valve.

Patent №: 11784760 (October 10, 2023) – Method and system for contiguous HARQ memory management with memory splitting.
This patent describes apparatuses, including user equipment (UE) and modern chips for UEs, as well as systems and methods for UE downlink Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) buffer memory management. It introduces a technique where the entire UE DL HARQ buffer memory space is pre-partitioned based on the number and capacities of the UE’s active carrier components. Additionally, it explores a method for splitting the UE DL HARQ buffer between on-chip and off-chip memory, optimizing the allocation between the two based on an optimum ratio.

Patent №: 11783425 (October 10, 2023) – Blockchain subrogation payments.
This patent introduces a shared ledger system wherein a network of participants adheres to a set of consensus rules to manage and resolve subrogation claims between claimants and defendants. This innovative solution allows for the transparent exchange of evidence and settlement proposals, ensuring a smoother claims process. Additionally, it presents the option to settle subrogation payments off-chain or through on-chain token transactions.
