The Corporate Immune System: Big Companies’ Innovation Allergy |
Big companies have a corporate immune system — antibodies that aggressively attack anything new and innovative. Picture it: a lone innovator bravely suggesting change, only to be met with a barrage of PowerPoint slides detailing why “we’ve always done it this way.”
Consider Google’s journey. They started as a modest search engine until they introduced ad magic with AdSense. Suddenly, they weren’t just finding information; they were discovering gold at every click. Now, imagine a company attempting to sell ads to the corporate immune system — cue the ‘ads disrupt our user experience’ antibodies. But Google cracked the code and evaded the immune response, reaping the rewards.
Then there’s NASA, the epitome of innovation stuck in bureaucratic molasses. Their corporate antibodies seemed unbeatable until SpaceX showed up with reusable rockets and moxie. Realizing it was stuck in its old ways, NASA decided to partner with SpaceX, leveraging its agility and fresh thinking to launch itself back into the space race. NASA got a dose of SpaceX vitamin C to boost its innovative immune system.
So, the next time you witness a big company struggling to innovate, keep in mind: their immune system is likely attacking the very thing that could rescue them. And somewhere, a small startup is reaping the benefits.
