Welcome to the 27th of February 2024: Our goal is to celebrate the patent holders who have reached noteworthy milestones in their fields this week.

Kai Zhang
Mr. Zhang received a B.S. degree in computer science from Nankai University, Tianjin, China, in 2004, and a Ph.D. degree in computer science from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China, in 2011.
From 2011 to 2018, Kai was with Tencent Inc., Beijing, China; Mediatek Inc., Beijing; and Qualcomm Inc., San Diego, CA, USA, with a focus on video coding standardization.
He joined Bytedance Inc., San Diego, CA, USA, in 2018, where Zhang is leading the Standardization Team.
Most of his patents are essential to popular video coding standards. His research interests include video/image compression, coding, processing, and communication, especially video coding standardization.
Patent №: 11917211 (February 27, 2024) – Signaling of slice and tile picture partitions. A video processing method involves converting a video into a compressed bitstream by specifying rules for slice placement within tiles. These rules govern the size and placement of slices within each tile.

A video processing method involves converting a video with multiple video units into a coded representation. During this conversion, when processing a video unit, frequency tables and/or sorted intra prediction mode (IPM) tables are reset or initialized.
Patent №: 11917169 (February 27, 2024) – Palette mode for local dual tree. A video processing method involves converting a video block into a bitstream using a palette mode, representing samples with a palette of colour values. The palette size is determined based on whether a local dual tree is applied during conversion.

Takashi Ando
Principal Research Staff Member at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center.
Ando received the B.S. and M.E. degrees from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 1999 and 2001, and the Ph.D. degree from Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, in 2010, all in Materials Science.
He started to work on Gate-First High-k/Metal Gate technology in 2006 when he was assigned to IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. Then, he moved to IBM in 2008. In his early career at IBM, he developed a novel method of EOT scaling, which was termed ‘remote interfacial layer scavenging’. In parallel, he applied scientific learning to the productization of High-k/Metal Gate technology and enabled successful implementation in 32/22nm SOI products and 32/28nm LP products.

Patent №: 11915734 (February 27, 2024) – Spin-orbit-torque magnetoresistive random-access memory with integrated diode. This stack includes a free layer, tunnel junction layer, and reference layer. A cylindrical diode structure is then formed above the SOT-MRAM cell stack, with a write line in contact with the SHE rail and a read line adjacent to the diode structure’s outer electrode.

This method involves an Access Point (AP) transmitting a frame to one station (STA) while receiving a frame from another STA on different bands, combined as a multi-band. This allows simultaneous Downlink (DL) and Uplink (UL) transmissions.

This specification addresses a signaling field accommodating different transmission methods in a wireless LAN system. It allows for supporting new transmission methods alongside basic ones by adjusting the configuration of the signaling field.
Patent №: 11916711 (February 27, 2024) – Method and device for configuring NGV frame for wideband transmission in wireless LAN system. The transmission device generates the NGV frame and transmits it via a 20 MHz first band.

Wireless communication methods, systems, and devices aim to minimize conflicts between scheduling requests and downlink resources. By configuring the user equipment (UE) with specific periodicity and offset parameters, both the UE and the base station can identify scheduling request opportunities that don’t overlap with downlink transmission resources.
Patent №: 11917627 (February 27, 2024) – Multiplexing a scheduling request and a hybrid automatic repeat request acknowledgement having different priorities and different physical uplink control channel formats. Kim received a Ph.D. degree from the Gwangju Institute of Science Technology (GIST) in 2008.
Since 2016, he has been with LGE U.S., where he is an Assistant Vice President and has lead versatile video coding (VVC) activity, as the Head of video codec part.
His main research interests include image and video signal processing, data compression, pattern recognition, and machine learning.

Changhwan Park
Mr. Park was born in Busan, South Korea, in 1982. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and electronics engineering from Chung-Ang University, Seoul, South Korea, in 2005, 2007, and 2011, respectively.
From 2005 to 2011, Changhwan was a Research Assistant at the Mobile Communications Lab, at Chung-Ang University.
Since 2011, he has been a Deputy Principle Research Engineer with LG Electronics, Seoul.
His research interests include mobile communication and digital signal processing, especially for MIMO-OFDM and 5G.
