Provided are processes for the preparation of benzimidazole structures having Formula VIIIb-1: and salts and solvates thereof, wherein Z, X, R, Rand Rare as defined herein. Compounds of Formula VIIIb-1 are useful for the preparation of benzimidazole derivatives.
