Abstract

The polarization angle θof a polarizer () is set, and the reflection intensity Sin a cross Nicol state and the reference reflection intensity Refof a liquid crystal cell () are measured. A different polarization angle θis then set, and the reflection intensity Sin a cross Nicol state and the reference reflection intensity Refof the liquid crystal cell are measured. The rations S/RefS/Refof measured intensities and the ratio S·Ref/S·Refis determined in order to cancel the background components of the reference reflection intensities RefRefthus determining the value of cell gap accurately.
