An electrolyte for a capacitor and capacitor containing the electrolyte. The electrolyte has up to about 85%, by weight, water, up to about 65%, by weight organic solvent and an acid defined by HOOC—(CH)—COOH wherein x is 3, 5, 7 or 9, and ammonium hydroxide.
