Abstract

A negative electrode material for use in an alkaline cell. The negative electrode material comprising bismuth-coated zinc powder particles containing at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Bi and In. The zinc or zinc alloy powder preferably has a particle size within the range of 10 &mgr;m to 1000 &mgr;m. The bismuth-coated zinc powder particles are obtained by immersing a mixture of a zinc powder and a metallic bismuth powder in an aqueous alkaline solution to deposit bismuth on surfaces of the zinc powder particles by displacement.
