Abstract

A gene effective to render virus resistance to a plant without risks of biological hazard is provided. This invention provides TOM1 gene (SEQ ID NO:2) which encodes TOM1 protein (SEQ ID NO:1). Furthermore, this invention provides TOM3 gene (SEQ ID NO:4) which encodes TOM3 protein (SEQ ID NO:3). The TOM1 gene and the TOM3 gene are derived from . These encoded proteins are indispensable for multiplication of a tobacco mosaic virus. By alteration in these genes a transgenic plant can be produced which will have resistance against the tobacco mosaic virus.
