Abstract

A method of making paper in an alkaline or acid system wherein a selected crosslinked, cationized or amphoteric starch is added to the system, said starch being crosslinked by adding enough crosslinking agent to provide a starch having a breakdown viscosity of from about 2 to 85% and wherein the crosslinked, cationized or amphoteric starch is jet cooked under super atmospheric pressure at a temperature of from about 195.degree. to 325.degree. F.
