Abstract
Pixel level transparency control for see-through XR devices is described. An example system comprises an XR display, comprising a transparent waveguide layer, an infrared (IR) waveguide layer disposed on the XR display, and a dimmable layer disposed on the IR waveguide layer. The XR system further comprising, a light source array configured to emit red light, green light, blue light, and IR light controllable on per-pixel level, and a control circuitry. The control circuitry is configured to generate pixel-level drive signals to cause the light source array to (i) emit a red light pattern, green light pattern, and blue light pattern through the transparent waveguide layer to generate an XR image defined by the pixel-level drive signals, and (ii) emit an IR light pattern through the IR waveguide layer to the dimmable layer to change respective opacities of respective portions of the dimmable layer, on a pixel-level where respective portions of the dimmable layer correspond to pixels of the XR display.
