Abstract
An optical encoder optical encoder includes a scale and a detection head. The detection head includes a light source and light-receiving device with a light receiver surface. The light receiver surface has an element row with multiple light-receiving elements arranged along the measurement direction with the same period as that of the interference fringes. An error included in detection signals generated from the interference fringes, is referred to as a number-of-elements-induced error, and a predetermined allowable error is referred to as an allowable error. The number of light-receiving elements in the element row is set to be a number where the number-of-elements-induced error is smaller than the allowable error. The number-of-elements-induced error is caused when there is an odd total number of light-receiving elements and or when an odd number of light-receiving elements are functional.
