Abstract
A rotary encoder that is capable of securing a sufficient synthesis tolerance while achieving miniaturization is provided. The rotary encoderincludes a rotor, a stator, and a calculating unitfor calculating the rotation angle. The rotorhas a first rotor patternwith a plurality of unit patternsarranged along the measurement direction around the rotating shaft, and a second rotor patternwith fewer unit patternsthan the plurality of unit patternsin the first rotor patternarranged along the measurement direction. The number of the plurality of unit patternsof the first rotor patternand the number of the plurality of unit patternsof the second rotor patternare provided such that the maximum common divisor therebetween is two or more. The calculating unit calculates the rotation angle of the rotorbased on the detection signals from the first rotor patternand the second rotor pattern
