An internal-combustion engine which includes two cylinder groups, of which one cylinder group operates constantly, whereas the second cylinder group is inactive in a part-load operation for better fuel economy. However, during forward or reverse operation of the vehicle and during the warm-up phase of the internal-combustion engine, the second cylinder group is provided with a reduced fuel-air mixture to prevent the engine from dying. An actuating device is provided which responds to certain parameters such as engine temperature and gear position. This actuating device controls a radial cam which interacts with the throttle valve for the second set of cylinders during these conditions to supply the required fuel-air mixture.

Multi-cylinder internal-combustion engine control device

A multicylinder internal combustion engine having separate cylinder groups, each of which is associated with a fuel-air mixture supply means for selectively supplying a fuel-air mixture or only air thereto, and a process for supplying of a fuel-air mixture thereto. In accordance with all embodiments, air only is supplied to the second cylinder group when the engine is operating in a warmed-up condition, under partial load operating conditions, a fuel-air mixture being supplied to both cylinder groups, regardless of engine temperature conditions, once the partial load range has been exceeded. A fuel-air mixture is supplied to the first cylinder group in accordance with all embodiments, regardless of engine temperature or load conditions. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the engine, a single cam disk is utilized to control the air supply through the air intakes for both cylinder groups in cooperation with a vacuum cell, and a temperature controlled venting device for the vacuum cell. In accordance with the process embodiments, the fuel-air supply to the second cylinder group during warm-up is either progressively increased and then decreased to an amount approximating zero, or is held constant throughout the predetermined load range; while, with the engine warmed-up for operation, the supply of air only to the second cylinder group, in the partial load range, is either progressively increased, held constant, and then decreased to an amount approximating zero, or is increased, held constant to the end of the partial load range and then abruptly decreased to the amount approximating zero.

A multicylinder internal combustion engine is provided with fuel-air mixture feed devices associated with two different cylinders or groups of cylinders, and an exhaust conduit system in which two catalyzers are disposed, one downstream of the other. The exhaust produced by the first group of cylinders impinges on both catalyzers, while the exhaust of the second group of cylinders is fed through only the second catalyzer. During a predetermined partial load range, fuel is supplied only to one of the cylinder groups, while both cylinder groups are fed with fuel once this load range is exceeded. In a preferred embodiment, the turning on of fuel to the second cylinder group is effectuated by a cam disk that also serves the function of simultaneously controlling the supply of air through throttle valves to the respective cylinder groups.

Gear belt tensioning apparatus is provided for controlling the tension in a gear belt for driving an internal combustion engine camshaft or the like. This apparatus includes a tension roller which engages directly with the gear belt and which is controlled by a temperature responsive control element. In order to accommodate for changes in temperature of the internal combustion engine, the control element is composed of a plurality of stacked bimetal dish-shaped spring members arranged in a cylindrical recess of an abutment fixed to the engine housing. These spring members are arranged in packets of four members each, which packets are then arranged so as to have the spring members of one packet facing in the opposite direction of the next adjacent packet of spring members.

An arrangement for mounting a fuel injection nozzle which is arranged in an aperture of the cylinder head of an internal combustion engine; the aperture is thereby provided with a recess, by means of which a form-locking connection is established with the cylinder head by the use of an elastic part of the fuel injection nozzle.
