In accordance with the present invention, an MCM substrate product is manufactured in an additive process using multiple layers of a fluoropolymer composite material and copper. The copper layers are plated, and the fluoropolymer composite layers are laminated. A seeding process promotes reliable bonding between the fluoropolymer composite material and the plated copper. The use of the filled fluoropolymeric composite eliminates the need for a barrier metal layer between the insulation and the conductors. The MCM substrate device of the present invention may have multiple metal layers and multiple dielectric layers; four or five, or more, of each in a single structure would be easily achieved and is typical. The structure would include lead lines in separate mutually orthogonal planes (sometimes referred to as 'x' and 'y' lead lines) sandwiched between ground and power voltage planes of copper. The MCM substrate device of the present invention also has solid copper vias, which may be used either as electrical interconnection between layers of the MCM substrate and/or to the I/C's to be packaged in the module, or as thermal vias for heat conduction for thermal management. The manufacturing process of the present invention makes it possible to start or stop any via in any layer of the device.

Method of manufacture multichip module substrate

A circuit board electrical interconnection system, including improved, elongated, bodily-rotatable interconnect elements, is disclosed. Each element has tab portions projection angularly from the opposing ends of the element, which tab portions define a pair of pad engagement surfaces. The pad engagement surfaces engage corresponding contact pads on opposing surfaces of two circuit boards by means of elastic support member. The element is divided longitudinally, axially or laterally into a plurality of sectors. Some sectors are electrically conductive, while others have other electrically predetermined characteristics. The two types of sectors are arranged in an alternating patter. The non-conducting sectors may be comprised of insulative, resistive or capacitive materials.

In an electroluminescent lamp having a phosphor layer disposed between corresponding lamp electrodes adapted to apply an excitation potential to cause the phosphor layer to emit light, a front lamp electrode which, in addition to being light transmissive to radiation from the phosphor layer, consists of a thin layer of light-transmissive binder containing a distribution of discrete particles that are characteristically light-reflective and electrically conductive. The electrode particles provide aggregate diffuse outward reflectance sufficient to serve as a reflector behind an LCD display for ambient light that falls upon the LCD display to illuminate the display under light ambient conditions. Furthermore, the particles in the electrode layer are adapted to contribute to electrical continuity through the layer sufficient to apply excitation to the phosphor layer, and the electrode layer particles have sufficient spaces between them to provide escape-paths for light from the excited phosphor layer to back-illuminate the LCD display under dark ambient conditions. A method of forming the improved electrode, e.g. by shear transfer techniques, is also described. Certain aspects of the invention apply to the function of improved transflective layers, per se.

The invention provides electroluminescent lamps that contain light-emitting phosphors and covering layers which have unusual durability, light transmissivity and resistance to moisture using simple screen printing and doctor blade coating techniques. It is discovered that a liquid dispersion of thermoplastic polymer powder particles, e.g. predominantly of polyvinylidene fluoride, simultaneously: (a) can suspend electrical property additives, such as crystalline, hard, dense particles of generally spherical shape, uniformly in desired concentrations (b) while containing a useful concentration of any of a wide range of such particles, can be deposited by high shear transfer to a substrate in accurately controllable thickness and contour; (c) when so deposited can be fused into a continuous uniform film which has low absorptivity, e.g. of moisture and acts as a barrier film; (d) can, as one layer, be fused with other such layers, containing other electrical property additives, to form a monolithic electrical component; and, (e) in general, can meet all requirements for the making of electroluminescent lamps.

Inductive devices, i.e., transformers, coils, inductors, etc. are produced from a rolled flexible circuit. The flexible circuit is comprised of a dielectric substrate having a circuit pattern thereon. The circuit pattern is configured such that, upon rolling, one or more coils is formed thereby defining an inductor, transformer, etc. Additionally, these inductive devices may be easily shielded using a ground plane in the flexible circuit. The rolled flexible circuit may be secured in several ways including an adhesive or by using a thermoplastic bonding layer which acts to heat seal the circuit together. The inductive devices of the present invention may be wrapped or rolled about a permeable core which improves inductance. Inductor devices manufactured in accordance with the present invention have the advantages of being small, surface mountable, inexpensive to manufacture and being capable of insertion onto printed wiring boards using automated insertion equipment. The small size of the inductor devices permit the present invention to take up only small areas on the circuit board thereby conserving valuable 'real estate' on the printed wiring board.

A full travel membrane keyboard is presented having membrane switches with an elastomeric layer between the membrane switching array and upper mechanical elements of the key, the elastomeric layer serving to evenly distribute actuation forces, contribute to the sensation of pretravel and provide the sensation of overtravel. The assembly results in reduced cost and reduced number of components.

Various structures for and methods of constructing miniaturized high capacitance bus bars are presented. The bus bars incorporate discrete high capacitive elements between a pair of bus bar conductors. In a preferred embodiment, a zebra film comprised of an elastomeric material having alternating strips of conducting and nonconducting material is positioned between the capacitive elements and the bus bar conductors. This zebra structure establishes electrical contact between the capacitive elements while avoiding the development of short circuits between the two bus bar conductors. This zebra structure may also have a mechanical force means applied whereby the applicable conductive surfaces are urged into electrical contact with the elastomeric strip material.

Various structures for and methods of constructing miniaturized high capacitance bus bars are presented. The bus bars incorporate discrete high capacitive elements between a pair of bus bar conductors. Alternate arrangements are presented wherein the capacitive elements are maintained in electrical contact with the conductors while avoiding the development of short circuits between the two bus bar conductors.

An improved method of manufacturing electrical and electronic circuits is provided wherein an improved conductive ink is employed to define the pathways of current flow. This improved conductive ink is comprised of conductive particles, thermosetting binder and a multifunctional isocyanate. The isocyanate provides cross-linking between the conductive ink binder and the surface upon which the ink is applied and establishes a bond with enhanced moisture durability.

A tactile snap-action element for use in keyboards, the element comprising an arcuately shaped invertible first dome and a second dome shaped actuating protrusion extending from the invertible second dome, the actuating dome protrusion being integral with the invertible dome and being non-invertible. The element is operated by an actuation force which acts directly or indirectly through the non-inverting second dome to invert the first dome and to provide tactile feedback. The keyboard includes a plurality of keys, each key comprising an element, a conductive circuit associated with the first dome and movable with the inversion of the first dome to electrically contact a second conductive circuit associated with the element.

A tactile snap-action element for use in keyboards, the element comprising an arcuately shaped invertible dome defining a first contour and a dome actuating protrusion defining a second contour, the protrusion being integral with the dome and being non-invertible. The element is operated by an actuation force which acts directly or indirectly through the non-inverting protrusion to invert the first contour and to provide tactile feedback. The keyboard includes a plurality of keys, each key comprising an element, a conductive circuit associated with the first contour and moveable with the inversion of the first contour to electrically contact a second conductive circuit associated with the element.

The disclosure relates to a rotary machine, the basic elements of which are generically adapted for use as a two-stage pneumatic compressor or as a four-cycle combustion engine or as a two-cycle combustion engine. The basic combination of elements of the machine comprises a plurality of rotors rotatably mounted on axes disposed at substantially right angles to each other and wherein the rotors are provided with peripheral portions having inwardly notched or recessed chamber portions which are disposed between alternate radially extending lobe portions. The lobe portion of each rotor adapted to pass into a respective recess chamber portion of another rotor in an intersecting area and means is provided to rotate the rotors in timed relationship with each other; each rotor having a central air compressor inlet disposed near its respective rotary axis and having outwardly directed centrifugal compressor blade means extending from the generally central inlet to the peripheral portions of the respective lobes at which each lobe is provided with a compressor outlet; a housing for said rotors comprising an air receiving plenum communicating with the periphery of each rotor for receiving compressed air from the outlets of said centrifugal compressor outlets of the lobes; each plenum extending an arcuate distance sufficient to provide for supercharging of each of said recess chamber portions as they pass the respective air receiving plenum in the housing.
