A method for the selective removal of boron halides and other Lewis acid-type impurities from silicon halides is disclosed. Treatment of contaminated silicon halides with siloxanes, which react with the impurities, allow the distillation of silicon halide which is virtually free from contamination within extremely low limits of detectability.

Silane-functionalized ultraviolet screening agent precursors comprise compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is ##STR2## R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, R.sup.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkanoyl, R.sup.3 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkoxyl, X is 0,1 or 2, y is 1,2, or 3 and x+y=3. Under ultraviolet radiation the compounds rearrange to the corresponding .alpha.-hydroxybenzophenones which protect substrates, especially transparent plastics, against degradation.

Silane-functionalized ultraviolet screen precursors

New 1,1,1-triaryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethanes in which the aryl radicals carry one or more substitutents have been prepared by condensation of trifluoroacetophenones with substituted phenyl compounds in the presence of catalytic quantities of trifluoromethylsulfonic acid. The reaction can be carried out under reflux in toluene or, for strikingly better results in certain cases, reactants are simply stirred at room temperature for about 24 to 48 hours.

1,1,1-Triaryl-2,2,2-trifluoroethanes and process for their synthesis

An improved silicone resin coating composition is provided, the composition comprising a dispersion of colloidal silica in an aliphatic alcohol-water solution of the partial condensate of a silanol with a small stabilizing amount of a .beta.-dicarbonyl compound added thereto.
