In a process for manufacturing a humectant with a chemical structure similar to that of natural moisture regulators, residual molasses from sugar beet molasses are treated and the organic acids contained, in particular L-2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxlyic acid and lactic acid, are obtained and then neutralized and concentrated to form a humectant.

Process for manufacturing a humectant

Amino acid fractions of different composition are obtained at different times by fractional filtration after neutralization of the hydrolysates. Tyrosine-rich and leucine-rich fractions are specifically treated and lead to the recovery of L-tyrosine, L-cystine, L-leucine and L-phenyl-alanine.

Process for recovering amino acids from protein hydrolysates

A solution of leucine, isoleucine and valine is concentrated at a pH-value of from 1.5 to 2.0 to produce a mother liquor enriched with isoleucine and valine and a solid phase enriched with leucine. Concentrated hydrochloric acid is added to the mother liquor enriched with isoleucine and valine and, after concentration, a mother liquor enriched with valine and leucine and a solid phase enriched with isoleucine are obtained.
