A heat exchanger that includes an extruded core member defining a plurality of spaced apart flow passages. The core member has first and second sides, one of said first and second sides defining a first set of flow openings communicating with the flow passages and one of said first and second sides defining a second set of flow openings communicating with the flow passages. A first unitary end cap connected to the first end of the core member has a first member sealing the first flow passage ends of at least some of the flow passages, and a second member extending from the first member partially over the side of the core member defining the first set of flow openings and defining at least one flow path between at least some of the first set of flow openings. A second unitary end cap connected to the second end of the core member has a first member sealing the second flow passage ends of at least some of the flow passages, and a second member extending from the first member partially over the side of the core member defining the second set of flow openings and defining with the core member at least one flow path between at least some of the second set of flow openings.

Heat exchanger with flow circuiting end caps

A heat exchanger has oil core plates and coolant core plates disposed in alternating, stacked relationship. Flow passages are provided between adjacent plates, so that the oil flow passages alternate with the coolant flow passages, and the oil can flow from an oil inlet opening of each oil plate, and through the oil flow passage to an oil outlet opening, and coolant can flow from a coolant inlet opening of each coolant plate through the coolant flow passage to a coolant outlet opening. The oil inlet openings are adjacent to one end of the plates, and the oil outlet openings are spaced from the oil inlet openings, with a passageway for flow of the oil between upstanding bosses of the coolant plates on opposed sides of each oil plate and extending from a gap in an upstanding flange of the oil plate to the oil outlet opening.

Plate-type heat exchanger

A by-pass valve and a heat exchanger employing same is disclosed where the by-pass valve makes a short circuit from the heat exchanger inlet to the heat exchanger outlet to disable the heat exchanger under certain temperature conditions. The by-pass valve includes a housing defining a chamber. Three main ports communicate with the chamber, one being a valve port. A temperature responsive actuator located in the chamber operates a spring loaded valve to open and close the valve port. The valve port can be connected to one of the heat exchanger inlet or outlet, the other main ports are then connected in series with the other of the heat exchanger inlet or outlet.

By-pass values for heat exchanger

A mounting or end bracket is disclosed for producing plate and fin heat exchangers of the type having a plurality of stacked, hollow plate pairs or tubes including mating end bosses having communicating openings formed therein to form a manifold for the flow of fluid through the plate pairs or tubes. Fins are located between and at the top end bottom of the stacked plate pairs or tubes extending between the end bosses. End fittings are used for the inlet and outlet of fluid to the plate pairs or tubes. The mounting brackets allow the end fittings to be positioned where desired to define different flow circuits through the plate pairs, and also allow different size end fittings to be used, without having to use special spacers, different size fins or specially shaped plates to accommodate the different end fittings. The mounting brackets have a planar central portion and opposed offset end portions located in a plane parallel to and spaced from the central portion. The central portion has spacing projections extending transversely in a direction opposite to that of the opposite end portions. Different fitting sizes are accommodated simply by changing the height of the spacing projections.
