A highly stable liquid formulation having broad spectrum preservative properties which constitutes an admixture of an alkanol-substituted DMH, an iodopropynyl compound, a stabilizer of a hydantoin, urea or derivative thereof, and a hydroxyl solvent. Preferably the constituents are dimethyloldimethylhydantoin, 3-iodo-2-propynyl-butyl carbamate, dimethylhydantoin, and a glycol solvent. The preservative preferably has a total formaldehyde content of 5% and less than 0.2% of free formaldehyde. The composition is prepared by successively admixing the alkanol-substituted dimethyl-hydantoin and the stabilizer, the hydroxyl solvent, and the iodopropynyl compound. Also described is a stabilized iodopropynyl compound preferably containing dimethylhydantoin as the stabilizer.

Preferably the constituents are dimethyloldimethylhydantoin, 3-iodo-2-propynylbutyl carbamate, dimethylhydantoin, and a glycol solvent. The preservative preferably has a total formaldehyde content of 5% and less than 0.2% of free formaldehyde. The composition is prepared by successively admixing the dialkanol-substituted dimethylhydantoin and the stabilizer, the hydroxyl solvent, and the iodopropynyl compound. Also described is a stabilized iodopropynyl compound preferably containing dimethylhydantoin as the stabilizer.

Stabilization of iodopropynl compounds

The present invention is a method for producing solid halogenated hydantoin products using the process of melt extrusion. The form of the products which can be produced includes tablets, briquettes, pucks, dispensers, 'designer' forms such as Christmas ornaments, pellets, and granules. The halogenated hydantoin compounds used in the forms contain methylethylhydantoin or an admixture of methylethylhydantoin and dimethylhydantoin. The halogenated hydantoin compositions used to make the forms can also include additives such as solubility modifiers, compaction aids, fillers, surfactants, dyes, fragrances, dispersants, lubricants, mold releases, detergent builders, corrosion inhibitors, chelants, stabilizers, biocides, bromide sources, or oxidizing halogen compositions. The present invention is also the product which is made via the melt extrusion method. The invention also is a method of obtaining an improved feedstock via melt extrusion and the improved feedstock product. This improved feedstock product can be used for making forms by compaction.

According to the present invention, there are provided stable, solid compositions which include (a) a biodispersant, including surfactants; (b) a biocide, including halogenated hydantoins; and (c) optionally, a halogen scavenger, including a hydantoin; In a further embodiment, these compositions are added to a substrate in order to remove or to inhibit the formation of a biofilm and to prevent or to inhibit the growth of or to kill microorganisms.

Preservative mixtures

There are provided methods for producing solid anhydrous methylolhydantoins. Initially, an aqueous stirrable medium is dehydrated and heated to yield a substantially anhydrous stirrable melt. The aqueous stirrable medium includes (A) a solute selected from the group consisting of (i) a dimethyloldimethylhydantoin, (ii) a hydantoin reactant, (iii) a formaldehyde source reactant, or (iv) a combination of any of the foregoing; and (B) optionally a catalyst. A molten system is then provided by adding, to the stirrable melt, a reactant mixture which includes (A)(i) the same or a different hydantoin reactant, (ii) a substantially anhydrous formaldehyde source reactant which may be the same as or different than the formaldehyde source reactant, or (iii) a combination thereof; and (B) optionally, the same or a different catalyst; wherein the molten system includes (i) at least one hydantoin reactant and (ii) at least one dehydrated formaldehyde source reactant or substantially anhydrous formaldehyde source reactant.
