A cyclonic ice separator ( ) is provided for removing ice from low temperature aviation fuels. The temperature of the fuel is lowered beneath the freezing point of water, such that significant amounts of dissolved water leaves solution and becomes free water, and the free water freezes and becomes filterable. The fuel is then passed through the cyclonic separator ( ), which spins the fuel in an intense cyclonic spiral path to create centrifugal forces which separate the ice from the fuel. Heating elements ( ) are provided within the cyclonic separator ( ) to prevent blockage of ice and water discharge ports ( ). A mixture of fuel, ice and water is passed from the cyclonic separator ( ) and into a reclamation unit ( ), in which gravity separates a reclaimed portion of the fuel from the ice and water. The fuel is then passed through conventional aircraft filtration equipment ( ).

Cyclonic ice separation for low temperature jet fuels

Inert loading jet fuel ( ) is a provided by directly injecting an inerting agent ( ) directly into jet fuel ( ) while it is being loaded onboard an aircraft ( ) to ultimately make aircraft fuel tanks ( ) safe from ignition and explosions. The inerting agent ( ) is preferably gaseous nitrogen (N ) which is directly injected into the fuel flow ( ) during refueling of the aircraft ( ), and travels to the fuel tanks ( ) and then separates from the fuel ( ) within the fuel tank ( ) to substantially fill the ullage of the fuel tank ( ) with a non-explosive atmosphere. The inerting agent ( ) may also be injected in to aircraft fuels ( ) which are cooled to reduced temperatures such that the volume of the fuel ( ) is reduced, thereby allowing more fuel ( ) to be held in the storage ( ). The inerting agent may further be injected into aircraft fuels which are heated and then stored in fuel storage ( ) of the aircraft ( ) to de-ice the wings ( ) of the aircraft ( ). Such fuels are heated externally of the aircraft ( ) to elevated temperatures which are sufficiently high enough to transfer heat from the fuel, through a fuel tank ( ) extending within the wings ( ), and to the exterior of the wings ( ) to de-ice the aircraft ( ).

A method and apparatus are provided for de-icing an aircraft of the type having wings and fuel storage in the wings. Hot fuel is provided for fueling the aircraft. The hot fuel is at elevated temperatures which are sufficiently high enough to transfer heat from the fuel, through a fuel tank extending within the wings, and to the exterior of the wings to de-ice the aircraft. A storage tank stores the fuel, and a heater heats the fuel to elevated temperatures. An intermediate thermal transfer system having a secondary thermal fluid transfers heat from a primary power source to the fuel. Further, a substantial volume of the secondary thermal fuel may be maintained at elevated temperatures to provide a sufficient thermal reserve capacity for heating the fuel upon demand.

Method and apparatus for using hot fuels to de-ice aircraft

A shoe shield is adapted to be detachably secured to the lacings of a shoe to protect the lacings and to provide a surface for a decorative emblem or feature.

An elongated, generally strip-like shade visor device is removably attachable to the front frame section of a pair of eyeglasses to shade the wearer's eyes from overhead glare. Support tab portions of the visor project downwardly from its bottom side surface adjacent downturned opposite ends of the visor, each of the support tab portions having a resilient attachment loop removable secured thereto. To install the visor, the outer ends of the eyeglass temple bar members are inserted into the attachment loops, the visor is moved forwardly along the temple bar members, and the attachment loops are stretched diagonally around the outer top corner portions of the front frame section. With the visor mounted in this fashion, a rear side edge of the visor extends above and generally parallel to the top side edge of the front frame section, the front side edge of the visor extends forwardly of the front frame section, and the support tab portions and opposite ends of the visor are pressed rearwardly against the top side of the front frame section to resiliently hold the visor in place.
