Methods, systems, and devices are described for concurrently performing handoff-related measurements for neighbor cells using multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna resources. In one example, a mobile device is in communication with a serving cell. Handoff-related measurements of first wireless signals from a first neighbor cell are performed. The first wireless signals are received at first MIMO antenna resources of a device. Handoff-related measurements of second wireless signals from a second neighbor cell are performed, as well. The second wireless signals are received at second MIMO antenna resources concurrently with the first wireless signals received at the first MIMO antenna resources. The first handoff-related measurements and the second handoff-related measurements may be performed during a scan interval. A type of handoff-related measurement to perform may be determined based on a determined length of the scan interval.

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) based concurrent scan of neighbor cells

Methods and apparatuses are provided for configuring resources at a device operating in a sleep mode of a wireless network. The device can use at least some of the resources for other purposes, such as scanning neighbor base stations, acquiring system parameters of the wireless network or other networks, etc., based in part on requirements of a current interval of the sleep mode. In an available interval, a serving base station may attempt to communicate with the device, and thus, the device can keep at least one receiver chain tuned to the serving base station while assigning other resources to communicate with other base stations. In an unavailable interval, the device can assign all resources for communicating with the other base stations.

Apparatus and method for configuring radio resources in sleep mode

Certain embodiments of the present disclosure relate to methods for improving a service flow of a mobile device based upon a different level of its available battery power. If the battery power availability is below a predefined threshold, then one or more power-saving techniques can be triggered that increase an air time of the mobile device and provide savings of power consumption at different rates using a different level of clock rate.

Methods and apparatus for service provisioning in wireless communication networks

Methods and apparatus for using a location of a mobile station (MS) and information about neighbor base stations (BSs) to assist network entry and initialization, scanning, and/or handover operations are provided. The location of the MS may be ascertained by determining the Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of the MS internally or by receiving the location from, e.g., a GPS device external to the MS. The information about neighbor BSs may be retrieved from a BS information database based on the location of the MS. The BS information database may reside within the MS, be broadcast periodically to the MS in an effort to update the MS's internal database, or be stored in the network operator's database. Knowledge of the MS's location and information about neighbor BSs may reduce the time spent during network entry, scanning, or handover, and thereby, power consumption; and may increase the bandwidth usage efficiency.

GPS-assisted cell selection for mobile devices

Methods and apparatus for easily and quickly returning to a first radio access technology (RAT) network when handover to a second RAT network is cancelled are provided. The methods and apparatus may involve a mobile station (MS) entering idle mode before handover to the second RAT network is completed and requesting a serving base station (BS) to retain MS service and operational information, as well as service flow state information. In this manner, should handover to the second RAT network be cancelled before completion, a re-entry to the first RAT network may be expeditiously performed using the retained MS information.

Systems and methods for multimode wireless communication handoff

In a multi-threaded processor mobile device, power consumption is reduced by matching a number of active processing resources with the data rate capability of a serving base station. The number of active resources may be adjusted to increase the amount of time the mobile device is in an all-waits period, where its processors are all idle at the same time. Increasing the all-waits time increases power savings. The mobile device may reduce the number of active resources to reduce power consumption or may increase the number of active resources temporarily in order to increase an all-waits period. The mobile device may also operate in a low power state by adjusting its active resources and operating at a reduced data rate, which is communicated to a base station.

Reducing power consumption in multi-threaded processor mobile devices

Certain embodiments of the present disclosure provide techniques for selecting a new cell, from a plurality of cells in a boundary area between first and second coverage areas, for a wireless device. The first and second coverage areas may include, for example, include cells controlled by first and second operators or cells in different time zones. In either case, the techniques may facilitate giving preference to cells in a same coverage area as a current cell. The wireless device may then select a cell from the list of neighbor cells as the new cell.

Methods and systems for improving response message transmission reliability

Methods and systems are described for using location-based information to determine whether to perform a ranging procedure. A change in location of a device is identified. The identified change in location represents the distance the device has moved during an interval between ranging procedures. The identified change in location is analyzed to determine whether the change exceeds a threshold distance. If the change in location does not satisfy the threshold distance, a change in a signal quality metric of the device from the location associated with the previously performed ranging procedure to the current location is identified. The identified change in signal quality metric is analyzed to determine whether the change exceeds a threshold value. If the change in location of the device is less than the threshold distance and the change in the signal quality metric is less than the threshold value, the next scheduled ranging procedure is bypassed.

Location based determination to perform a ranging procedure

Certain embodiments of the present disclosure provide a unified scheme for selecting an operator and a radio access technology (RAT) by a multi-mode wireless device during a power-up or a handover process. By utilizing the proposed scheme, the mobile station may switch between RATs that are associated with the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) or 3GPP2 standards.

Methods and systems using unified operator and rat mapping and selection scheme

A mobile device capable of communicating on multiple radio access networks simultaneously may concurrently operate calls of a first call type on a first network and a second call type on the second network. As the mobile device approaches the limits of the service area of the second network it may take measurements to result in the call of the second call type to be serviced by the serving cell of the first network which is serving the mobile device for the first call type. In this manner the mobile device may ensure that when it leaves the service area of the second network, the calls of the first call type and second call type are served by the same serving cell in the first network.

Packet-switch handover in simultaneous TDD-LTE and TD-SCDMA mobile communications

Certain embodiments of the present disclosure control whether or not certain protocol stack operation are performed in a hardware (HW) protocol stack accelerator based on ARQ/HARQ re-transmission rate. Latency penalties associated with using the HW accelerator are typically higher than the data movement overhead when this data does not need to be processed by the HW accelerator, such as when a re-transmission error occurs. According to certain embodiments, the HW accelerator is activated if the ARQ/HARQ re-transmission rate is below a threshold value. Otherwise, if the ARQ/HARQ re-transmission rate is above a threshold, at least a portion of the HW accelerator may be de-activated, which may reduce overhead associated with moving data between the protocol stack and the HW accelerator.

Methods and systems using threshold switches for protocol accelerators

Embodiments provide methods, systems, and/or devices to identify and/or determine a closest base station to a multi-mode mobile device among the multiple wireless communications technologies, such as different Radio Access Technologies (RATs). Having identified a closest base station to the multi-mode mobile device among the multiple wireless communications technologies, the mobile device's location may be estimated using location information regarding the closest identified base station. In some cases, a handover or other procedure may be performed with respect to the mobile device and the closest identified base station. The multiple wireless communications technologies may include, but are not limited to, WiMAX, CDMA 1x, LTE, and/or EVDO.
