Method of preparing magnetic coating composition

A process for producing a magnetic recording medium is described in which a hardening agent and a lubricant are added to a magnetic coating solution prior to coating thereof on a non-magnetic support. It has been found that improved magnetic recording properties and consistent product characteristics are obtained if the addition of the hardening agent and lubricant to the magnetic coating solution is carried out within about 240 minutes of surface calendering treatment of the magnetic recording medium.

Process for producing a magnetic recording material

A method of preparing a kneaded mixture for a magnetic coating material comprises a kneading start process and a continuous kneading process. In the kneading start process, a low-viscosity composition, which is composed of magnetic layer forming materials containing ferromagnetic grains and a binder, and a solvent, is introduced into a kneading vessel of a two-shaft continuous kneading and mixing machine, and kneading is started. In the continuous kneading process, after the start of the kneading, a high-viscosity composition, in which a solvent amount is smaller by at least 7 wt % than the solvent amount in the low-viscosity composition used in the kneading start process, is continously introduced into the kneading vessel, and the kneading is continued while high shearing force is being given to the high-viscosity composition.

Method of preparing kneaded mixture for magnetic coating material

A method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium comprising the steps of: (1) providing a lower layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder on a non-magnetic support and (2) providing an upper layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder on the lower layer, wherein a solvent used in a magnetic coating composition for the lower layer contains at least 30 wt % of an organic solvent having an evaporation rate index of less than 50; a solvent used in a magnetic coating composition for the upper layer contains from 0 to 40 wt % of an organic solvent having an evaporation rate index of less than 50; the content of an organic solvent having an evaporation rate index of less than 50 in the coating composition for the upper layer is smaller than that in the coating composition for the lower layer; the magnetic coating composition for the upper layer is coated while the lower layer is not dried; and when the lower and upper layers are dried until the total solvent content of the lower and upper layers is in the range of from 0.05 to 3 wt %, a calendering treatment is carried out.

Method for manufacturing magnetic recording medium

A process for preparing a magnetic coating composition using a dried magnetic metal powder, or a magnetic metal powder containing 50% by weight or less of a solvent is described. The process comprises adding from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of an abrasive, from 5 to 20 parts by weight of a main binder, and from 0 to 60 parts by weight of a solvent to 100 parts by weight (calculated as a dry powder) of the magnetic metal powder and, thereafter, kneading the resulting mixture while applying a shearing stress of from about 20 to about 300 kg/cm.sup.2.

Process for preparing magnetic coating composition

A magnetic recording medium which comprises a non-magnetic support having thereon a magnetic recording layer containing a ferromagnetic fine powder and a binder as main components is disclosed. The magnetic recording layer containing as the binder (1) a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-maleic acid copolymer which has a mean polymerization degree of about 300 to about 400 and a maleic acid fraction of about 0.6 to about 1.5 wt %, (2) a polyurethane resin which has a number average molecular weight of 40,000 to 100,000 and is prepared from (i) a mixture of polyneopentyladipate having a mean molecular weight of 500 to 2,500 and polybutyleneadipate having a mean molecular weight of 500 to 2,500 with a mixing ratio of the former to the latter of from 2/8 to 9/1 by weight and (ii) diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and optionally (3) a low molecular weight polyisocyanate compound.
