An edible, hardenable coating composition containing microcrystalline cellulose and carrageenan and at least one of a strengthening polymer, a plasticizer, a surface active agent or a combination thereof. The coating composition of the present invention may be applied to pharmaceutical and veterinary solid dosage forms, confectionery, seeds, animal feed, fertilizers, pesticide tablets, and foods and provides an elegant prompt release coating which does not retard the release of active ingredients from the coated substrate.

Ultra-fine microcrystalline cellulose compositions are disclosed which produce highly stable suspensions and/or dispersions in which substantially all of the microcrystalline cellulose has a particle size not greater than about 0.7 .mu.m. The compositions include an attriting aid which has a dual functionality, assisting in reducing the size of the cellulose microcrystals and adding a desired property or ingredient to the dispersions or other product in which the compositions are utilized.

Ultra-fine microcrystalline cellulose compositions and process

Rapidly disintegrating and readily suspendible tablets and their method of preparation are disclosed in which there is a therapeutic amount of a pharmacologically active ingredient, 1 to 6 percent croscarmellose sodium, 10 to 50 percent microcrystalline cellulose, and 10 to 50 percent of a coprocessed additive consisting essentially of 75 to 95 percent microcrystalline cellulose and 5 to 25 percent calcium, sodium alginate complex. The tablets are suitable for oral administration of measured-dose suspensions of either water soluble or water insoluble pharmaceuticals.

The present invention discloses the taste masking of drugs by wet granulating the drug with a microcrystaline cellulose compositions then spheronizing the granulation into spheres having a smooth uniform surface and a particle size in the range of 1 to 1000 microns.

Novel pharmaceutical suspensions comprising a pharmaceutically active ingredient suspended in aqueous media with a suspending agent comprising attrited microcrystalline cellulose coprocessed and at least partially surface coated with a calcium sodium alginate salt complex barrier dispersant and readily dispersible and hydratable dry formulations thereof are described and exemplified.
