Novel gene combinations resulting in novel lipid profiles of soybean seeds and oil extracted from such seeds are disclosed. Methods for making such combinations are also described. In addition, the oils of this invention are disclosed to be useful in the manufacture of margarine and spread products.

A novel method of identifying genetic markers linked to alleles conferring yield potential of a crop species has been developed. By conducting genetic marker analysis of a set of current elite lines and the ancestral population from which they were derived by decades of plant breeding, one can determine and compare the expected and observed allele frequencies within elite populations at numerous polymorphic loci. Since the traditional plant breeding effort has consistently utilized yield as a selection criteria, deviations from expected allele frequency at certain loci have been used to identify alleles that confer yield potential. Agronomically superior progeny can, therefore, be selected utilizing genetic markers.

Method to identify genetic markers that are linked to agronomically

A novel method of identifying genetic markers linked to allels conferring yield potential of a crop species has been developed. The utilization of a positive selection seed screening process to isolate rate variants with resistance to a herbicide is described. The ability to screen large numbers of mutagenized seed has made it feasible to pursue and isolate plants with low frequency dominant herbicide-resistance mutations. The dominant herbicide resistance mutations are useful for many applications including expanding the utility of sulfonylurea herbicides for soybean weed control, production of F.sub.1 and F.sub.2 seeds, and as selectable markers for efficient seed purification.
