A cooling system for a turbine engine including a heat exchanger in fluid communication with a first fluid inlet stream and disposed upstream and in fluid communication with a core engine. The heat exchanger operative to cool the first fluid inlet stream. The heat exchanger including a heat exchanger inlet for input of a heat exchanging medium for exchange of heat from the first fluid inlet stream to the heat exchanging medium. The heat exchanger further including a heat exchanger outlet for discharge of a heated output stream into one of a turbine of a downstream engine, an augmentor or a combustor of the core engine. The heated output stream provides an additional flow to the downstream engine. A turbine engine including the cooling system is disclosed.

High speed propulsion system with inlet cooling

A method of manufacturing an internally cooled blisk by additive manufacturing processes to provide weight reduction and power-to-weight ratio improvement, leading to improved efficiency, a decrease in fuel burn and lifecycle costs in an engine employing the internally cooled blisk. The method of manufacturing including defining a configuration for the internally cooled blisk, the configuration comprising a disk, an annular array of angularly spaced blades extending about a periphery of the disk and one or more internal cooling features defined within the internally cooled blisk. The method further including the step of programming the configuration into an additive manufacturing system. A powder is deposited into a chamber and an energy source is applied to the deposited powder to consolidate the powder into a cross-sectional shape corresponding to the defined configuration. Additionally provided is an internally cooled blisk.

Internally cooled turbine blisk and method of manufacture

A pulse detonation combustor (PDC) includes a combustion tube, an inlet located on an upstream end of the combustion tube which receives a flow of a fuel/air mixture, an enhanced DDT region located within the tube downstream of the inlet, a nozzle disposed on a downstream end of the tube and a fortified region disposed downstream of the enhanced DDT region and upstream of the nozzle. A combustion initiation system that provides multiple initiation locations at different axial stations along the length of the tube are positioned downstream of the inlet and upstream of the fortified region. The initiator system is operable to initiate combustion of a fuel-air mixture within the tube at a selected one of the initiation locations.

Variable initiation location system for pulse detonation combustor

A pulse detonation combustor including a plurality of nozzles engaged with one another via mating surfaces to support a gas discharge annulus in a circumferential direction. The pulse detonation combustor also including multiple pulse detonation tubes extending for the nozzles and a plurality of thermal expansion control joints coupled to the plurality of pulse detonation tubes. Each of the plurality of thermal expansion control joints is configured to facilitate independent thermal growth of each of the plurality of pulse detonation tubes. The thermal expansion control joints may be configured as a bellows expansion joint or a sliding expansion joint.

Pulse detonation combustor

A rotating valve assembly includes an inner cup having at least one inlet port; an outer cup having at least one inlet port, the outer cup rotatably mounted concentric with the inner cup by a bearing arrangement; and a cooling system located between the inner cup and the bearing arrangement for providing a thermal barrier between the inner cup and the bearing arrangement. The valve assembly also includes a labyrinth sealing arrangement located around the at least one inlet port of one of the inner and outer cups for preventing leakage of pressure waves generated by detonations or quasi-detonations within a combustion chamber of the inner cup.

Rotating valve assembly for high temperature and high pressure operation

A system for efficiently creating cyclic detonations is provided. The system includes at least a first initiator chamber configured to generate an initial wave, at least one main chamber coupled to the first initiator chamber. The main chamber is configured to generate a main wave and to output products of supersonic combustion. The products are generated within the main chamber. The main chamber is configured to enable the main wave to travel upstream and downstream within the main chamber when the first initiator chamber is located outside the main chamber. The system further includes an initial connection section located between the first initiator chamber and the main chamber that enhances a combustion process via shock focusing and shock reflection.
