The invention relates to a process for preparing a hydrophobic starch, comprising etherification, esterification or amidation of a root or tuber starch comprising at least 95 wt. % of amylopectin, based on dry substance of the starch, or a derivative thereof, with a substituent comprising an alkyl chain having from 4&#x2013;24 carbon atoms. The invention further relates to a hydrophobic starch obtainable by said process.

Hydrophobic starch derivatives

The invention relates a process of oxidizing starch wherein a root or tuber starch comprising at least 95 wt. % based on dry substance of the starch amylopectin, or a derivative therof, is treated with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst, which catalyst comprises divalent copper ions. The present invention further relates to an oxidizable starch obtainable by a process comprising treating a starch with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst, which catalyst comprises divalent copper ions.

Oxidation of starch

The invention relates to a process for the oxidation of starch, wherein a root or tuber starch comprising at least 95 wt. % of amylopectin, based on dry substance of the starch, is treated with an oxidizing agent and the resulting product is subjected to an alkaline treatment, said treatment comprising keeping the product for at least 15 minutes at a temperature of 20-50&deg; C. and a pH higher than 10. The invention further relates to an oxidized starch obtainable by said process and to various applications of said oxidized starch.

The invention relates to a process for making paper and to the use of starch in said process. In particular, the invention relates to a process for making paper, wherein in the wet-end a cross-linked starch is added to an aqueous suspension of cellulose-based fibers, which starch has a degree of cross-linking of, measured as a FANN viscosity at 300 rpm, of less than 50 mPas, and a FANN-A value of less than 2.5.

The invention relates to an adhesive composition comprising a derivative of a starch, which comprises at least 95 wt. % of amylopectin, based on dry substance of the starch, wherein the derivative is obtainable by cross-linking, etherification, esterification or a combination thereof, of the starch. The invention further relates to a process for preparing the adhesive composition and to the use thereof for adhering wallpaper or billposter to a substrate.
