In an arrangement for operating valves of an internal combustion engine by means of at least two operating members for opening and closing each valve and a camshaft with cams having base portions and camming portions for operating the operating members wherein the operating members for a valve are disposed in side-by-side relation and have guide bores which are aligned when the operating members are disposed on the base portions of the cams and a coupling pin is movable in the guide bores and couples the adjacent operating arms when disposed so as to extend thereacross for movement of said adjacent operating members in unison, the coupling pin is barrel-shaped wife tapered end sections and a center section of a larger diameter which, with the guide bores of the adjacent operating members, forms a cylindrical fit with a clearance of 1-60 .mu.m.

Arrangement for operating valves of an internal combustion engine

A camshaft, especially for high-power internal-combustion engines, has bearing points and cams consisting of a base circle and a cam face. The bearing points and cams are connected to one another by non-cylindrical shank portions. In order to increase the bending resistance of the camshaft and, at the same time, to provide a predetermined necessary clearance for machining tools, a shank portion between two cams is made barrel-shaped, with a maximum diameter which is located in the middle region of the shank portion and which is equal to or less than the diameter of the base circle.

The invention relates to a device for angularly adjusting an internal combustion engine camshaft in relation to a crankshaft and comprises an adjusting bushing connected to the camshaft, with an input sleeve surrounding said bushing, and with an actuator displaceably arranged there between. An input sleeve, the actuator, and the adjusting bushing are each provided with helical gear teeth to translate axial shifting of the actuator into relative rotation between the camshaft and crankshaft. In order to prevent rattling noises in the gear teeth that are caused by changing moments in the drive of the camshaft, the actuator is guided in stop-free fashion. A stop, which is effective between the input sleeve and camshaft, limits the angular adjustment so that the actuator is stressed between the input sleeve and camshaft to avoid backlash during rattling.

An adjustable drive connection between an engine crankshaft and engine camshaft is provided by an electric motor connected to the camshaft via planetary gearing to cause relative rotation of an adjusting carrier in relation to a flanged shaft connected firmly to a camshaft. The carrier is fastened to this flanged shaft by means of a thread, so that its relative rotation with respect to the flange shaft is converted into an axial shafting of the carrier along the flange. An actuating element arranged on the carrier is likewise shifted axially. The axial shifting of the actuating element is converted into a relative rotation of the flanged shaft and a chain-wheel carrier driven by a crankshaft via helical teeth on the actuating element.

An angular adjustment is provided between a crankshaft and camshaft by a hydraulically operated rotary vane, which is pivotably mounted on the camshaft and is supported on a sprocket wheel carrier driven by a crankshaft rotation of the vane causing a relative rotation to take place between the crankshaft and camshaft. The rotary vane is held in each of its two end positions by a spring device.

Apparatus for relative angular adjustment between two shafts in drive

A multicylinder, especially six or eight cylinder internal combustion engine, which includes a valve shut off and a cam shaft on which is arranged a hollow shaft. The hollow shaft includes cams and is non-rotatably supported on the cam shaft. The hollow shaft is adapted to be connected with transmitting elements operating the valves of the respective cylinders which may be shut off. A connection to the transmitting elements between the cams of the hollow shaft and the transmission elements is eliminated by an axial displacement of the hollow shaft.

Valve shut-off arrangement for a multicylinder internal combustion engine

An exhaust gas system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, in which some cylinders are adapted to be effectively disconnected; the exhaust gas system includes in a common exhaust line, an O.sub.2 -probe and two series-connected catalysts while a separate exhaust gas line is coordinated to the cylinders adapted to be effectively disconnected; a control member operable as a function of load opens three separate branch connections from the separate exhaust line to the common exhaust line in such a manner that when all cylinders are firing, the branch connection terminating upstream of the O.sub.2 -probe is opened; the branch terminating in the common exhaust line between the O.sub.2 -probe and the first of the series-connected catalysts is opened when at least one of the cylinders is effectively disconnected and when the internal combustion engine is still relatively cold or warms up to a middle temperature; at temperatures exceeding the middle operating temperature, the branch connection terminating between the two catalysts is opened.

Exhaust gas system for internal combustion engines

A four-cycle internal combustion engine with external ignition, which is equipped with an intake or suction manifold and with a separate forced air supply to the exhaust channels; to that end an air supply channel is cast-in adjacent one of the exhaust channels provided in a cast cylinder head, whereby the air supply channel is in communication with a slot extending along one suction pipe side in the longitudinal direction of the engine block; the slot is covered off on its open side by a flange of the intake or suction manifold and is operatively connected with the individual exhaust channels by way of cross bores provided in the cylinder head.
