A self-lubricating plastic center plate assembly bearing liner for placement between a body bolster center plate and a truck bolster center plate of a center plate assembly in a railroad car, wherein the liner is configured to substantially mate with the center plates and includes a body having an integrally formed electrically conductive ring of plastic material which provides electrical continuity between the plates in the center plate assembly.

A gap closing device for closing the air gaps between the sidewall panels and the floor and/or the gaps between the sidewall panels and auxiliary floor panels or plates in an auto rack railroad car comprising an elongated strip of flexible extruded plastic material having a spine adapted to extend through the gap, a flap centrally connected to one end of the spine for closing the gap, and fins extending from the spine to lock the device in gap closing position. The fins may include a plurality of locking and/or pressure fins.

A brake beam wear plate for mounting in brake beam guide brackets of railroad car truck side frames having side walls of varying thicknesses to define a slideway for the brake beam lugs providing a sloppy fit and a path of movement to obtain the ideal clasping angle and alignment for the brake shoes with the wheels, and thereby produce better train handling during braking, and uniform wearing of the shoes to enhance shoe life and reduce maintenance.

A coupler carrier wear plate for a long-shank coupler which includes a mild steel base plate weldable to the carrier, a manganese steel wear plate engageably supporting the coupler shank and connected to the base plate by a resilient bonding material. The bonding material is of a thickness to accommodate flatness variations encountered on a coupler carrier.

A gap sealer for covering the gaps between horizontally extending and vertically spaced apart sidewall panels on auto rack railroad cars and between sidewall panels and the floor, roof or vertical posts. The gap sealer is a single piece of extruded plastic having a head attachable to a flange of a sidewall panel and a tail or flap biasing against the flange of a vertically adjacent sidewall panel, the floor, roof or post, such that the body of the gap sealer covers the gap to prevent air passage. The gap sealer may also include a bumper which protects vehicle doors from contacting the sidewall panels and risking damage. An individual bumper may also be used to protect vehicle doors, and be attached to a sidewall panel by a unique fastener.

A plastic knuckle pin for a coupler on a railway car which accepts bending fatigue, eliminates rust or corrosion, and reduces the coefficient of friction during opening and closing the coupler. The pin also protects the integrity of the coupler body and the knuckle to reduce coupler maintenance and further reduces the weight of the railway car and facilitates the use of a self-locking feature.

A series of derivatives of the biologically active C-terminus of gastrin was synthesized to study the structural activity of the molecule and also to determine the smallest and highest affinity inhibitor of gastrin. Earlier work speculated that a peptide resistant to dipeptidase contained in a receptor would be an effective gastrin antagonist. Methods: Five dogs with both chronic gastric fistulae and Heidenhein pouches were used. After an 18 hour fast, gastric juice was collected both from the gastric fistula and pouch over 200 minutes at 10 minute intervals. MMC (Migrating Motor Complex) was monitored by a small balloon in the gastric antrum. Collections were initiated at the beginning of phase I of the MMC and were obtained under 3 conditions: Control, pentagastrin infusion (0.5 .mu.g/Kg/h, i.v.) and pentagastrin+peptide infusion (Indole propionic acid [IPA]- Leu-Asp-Phenethyl amine [PEA], Boc-Trp-Leu-.beta.Ala, IPA-Leu-.beta.Ala, or Boc-Trp-Leu-Asp-methyl meta Aminobenzoic acid {mABAOMe] at 20 pmol/kg/h for 70 min.). Pentagastrin infusion was started immediately before the next peak of the MMC. Peptides were infused 60 minutes after starting pentagastrin infusion. Results: All four peptides inhibited the stimulated acid secretion causing it to approach the control level.

Novel C-terminal gastrin antagonists

A brake rod protector for a brake rod in a braking system of a railway vehicle to repair a worn brake rod or to provide protection against wear along an area where wear normally occurs. The protector includes a metal base plate shaped to conform with the brake rod and be attached thereto by welding or the like and a body of plastic material bonded to the outer surface of the base plate and to be slidably engageable with a member of the braking system or the railway vehicle.

A snap-on slide bearing for recessed type guide lugs of unit brake beams for mounting the unit brake beams in their railroad car truck side frame unit brake beam guide brackets, preferably in place of the conventional spring steel wear plate now generally in use, comprising a one piece body formed from an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene or other suitable plastic material of dry self lubricating characteristics that is rectilinear in outline and of channel shaped transverse cross-sectional configuration defining a web portion and spaced apart side walls shaped and proportioned for substantially complemental but slidable seating in the side frame guide bracket in which the guide lug is to be mounted, with the inner surfacing of one of the walls of the bearing body being formed to define integral lugs that snap fit into the brake beam guide lug top surface recess for securing the bearing to the guide lug, and when the brake beam is mounted in its operating position in the side frame guide brackets adapted to hold same, dispose the brake beam guide lug in substantial coplanar alignment with the desired brake beam movement radially of the axle wheel to be braked, on actuation of the brakes.

Apparatus is disclosed for controlling a pair of transverse scanning gauges disposed along the length of a moving sheet of material whereby continuous same-spot measurements of the material may be made irrespective of any variations in the speed of the material even as it traverses the distance between the scanning gauges.

A guide bearing for mounting unit brake beams, for application to railroad car truck side frame unit brake beam guide brackets, in place of the conventional spring steel wear plate now generally used, comprising a one piece body formed from an ultra high molecular weight polymer or other plastic grades of dry self lubricating characteristics that is of elongate trough configuration defining a web portion and spaced apart side walls shaped and proportioned for force fit seating in the guide bracket, with the inner surfacings of the body side walls being formed to closely receive the brake beam guide lug to be mounted in same, to dispose the brake beam guide lug in substantial coplanar alignment with the desired brake beam movement path radially of the axle wheel to be braked, on actuation of the brakes. The inner surfacings of the body walls have a coefficient of friction with respect to steel of about 0.15, and the outer surfacings of the body side walls are coated with a frictional material, such as natural rubber, having a coefficient of friction of about 1.0 relative to steel, for providing effective force fit and frictional retention mounting of the bearing in the bracket. The body includes at the end of same that is to face the axle wheel to be braked a clip arm for force fit application to the bracket end wall for facilitating the anchoring of the bearing to the bracket.

A slide bearing for attachment to U-section formed sheet metal type guide lugs of unit brake beams for mounting the unit brake beams equipped with such guide lugs in the railroad car truck side frame unit brake beam guide brackets, preferably in place of the conventional spring steel wear plate now generally in use comprising a one piece box like body, preferably formed from a polymeric material, such as UHMW polyethylene, of dry self lubricating characteristics that is rectilinear and planar in outline and of U-shaped transverse cross-sectional configuration defining a web portion and spaced apart side walls shaped and proportioned for substantially complemental but slidable seating in the side frame guide bracket in which the guide lug is to be mounted, with the side walls being closed at their end edges by integral end walls and with the inner surfacing of the side walls and the bearing body being formed to closely receive the brake beam guide lug, and with the respective body side walls each recessing in opposed relation a truncated washer. The washers have their center portions welded to the guide lug side walls to secure the bearing to the guide lug, and when the brake beam is mounted in its operating position in the side frame guide brackets adapted to hold same, the guide lug bearings dispose the brake beam guide lugs to which they are applied in substantially coplanar alignment with the desired brake beam movement radially of the axle wheel to be braked, on actuation of the brakes.

A snap-on slide bearing for application to U-section formed sheet metal type guide lugs of unit brake beams for mounting the unit brake beams equipped with such guide lugs in the railroad car truck side frame unit brake beam guide brackets, preferably in place of the conventional spring steel wear plate now generally in use, comprising a one piece U-shaped clip member formed from spring steel and defining spaced apart superposed congruently related parallel arms integrally joined at like ends by abridging web, with the arms at their other ends being angled toward each other to define for each such arm a locating stop spaced from the clip member web approximately the length of the the guide lugs, and with the clip member arms each having affixed to the outer surfacing of same a strip that is preferably formed from a polymeric material, such as UHMW polyethylene, which strip is rectilinear and planar in outline, which strips are shaped and proportioned for substantially complemental but slidable seating in the side frame guide bracket in which the guide lug is to be mounted, when the slide bearing is mounted on the guide lug. The slide bearing for each guide lug snap fits thereon from the leading edging of same and extends across the lug to dispose the clip member stops against the guide lug trailing edging.
