The present invention relates to nutritional supplements that provide an adult with essential vitamins and minerals that may be lacking in the adult's diet and prevent chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis. A number of combinations of nutrients in set ratios are provided to increase the body's ability to absorb and use the nutrients. These combinations are important in helping the body reach the proper balance required for maximized function. Because adults over the age of 50 years have different nutritional needs, nutritional supplements specifically designed for them are also provided.

A nutritional supplement for adults fifty years and older, and methods of use thereof, are provided that are designed to be most effective in optimizing health, improving vitality and immunity, and improving, aiding, eye and bone health.

Nutritional supplements for 50+ individuals for improving vitality, immunity, eye and bone health

The invention provides a nutritional supplement which includes micronutrients to facilitate reduction of cholesterol, and/or reduction of homocystein and/or reduction of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) oxidation in humans. In one embodiment the supplement is a multi-vitamin, a mineral supplement which includes at least one component known to reduce cholesterol. The invention further provides a method for tableting one fourth to one half of the daily effective dosage of a phytosterol containing nutritional supplement in a practical sized tablet and a method for reducing blood cholesterol in humans.

Multi-vitamin and mineral nutritional supplements

A method for the use of short chain fatty acids containing lipids in clinical nutrition to maintain gastrointestinal integrity and function in conditions where normal short chain fatty acid substrates, provided by bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates, is inadequate due to the clinical condition of the patient. By providing the short chain fatty acid in a lipid form of free fatty acid, triglyceride, diglyceride, monoglyceride, phospholipid, or cholesterol ester one is able to avoid the clinical defect and allow the gastrointestinal tract to continue to maintain its integrity and function. The short chain fatty acids of the present invention can be provided either in enteral preparations or parenteral preparations. The short chain fatty acids can be provided by hydrolysis of a structure such as: ##STR1## wherein R--COO--, R'--COO--, and R'--COO-- represent either the same or different short chain fatty acids.

Use of short chain fatty acid containing lipids to maintain

A lipid emulsion is provided comprising water, an emulsifier, and a glyceride oil component. The weight ratio of the emulsifier to glyceride oil is approximately 0.04 to about 0.01. It has been found that intravenous lipid emulsions having a weight ratio of emulsifier to glyceride oil of approximately 0.04 to about 0.01 are more rapidly metabolically utilized.

Lipid emulsion

A method is provided for individuals under treatment for or at risk of atherosclerotic, vascular, cardiovascular, and/or thrombotic disease by administering a composition which comprises a protein source; a carbohydrate source; and at least one lipid selected from the group consisting of: gamma-linolenic acid; eicosapentaenoic acid; docosahexaenoic acid; sterodonic acid; and linolenic acid. Both an enteral and parenteral composition are provided.

Medium chain triglyceride containing lipid emulsions for the nutrition of liver diseased or septicemic patients are improved by the inclusion in the emulsions of long chain triglycerides. The emulsions may also contain amino acids in proportions desirable for the nutrition of liver diseased patients, as well as carbohydrates, drugs, vitamins and electrolytes.

Described are lipid emulsions of marine oils comprising high concentrations of omega-3-fatty acid esters and low concentrations of free fatty acids for intraveneous administration for the treatment of thrombic disease states. More specifically, a lipid emulsion for parenternal use is provided comprising an emulsifier, water and a marine oil comprising an omega-3-fatty ester in which the concentration of the free fatty acid in the emulsion is below about 5 meq/l.

A p-nitrophenyl hydrolase contaminant present in Limulus coagulase sources interferes in, i.e., inhibits, coagulase-based assays for endotoxin. The contaminant inhibitor enzyme may be removed from coagulase by physical separation or by selective denaturation, for example by adjusting the pH of a coagulase solution to about from 8.5 to 11. Inhibitor-free coagulase is a novel composition. The coagulase activity of the composition is adjusted to a predetermined level to provide a standardized coagulase reagent for use in endotoxin assays.

Improvements in the sensitivity and reproducibility of nephelometric endotoxin determinations using endotoxin-activated enzyme from Limulus amebocyte lysate are achieved by contacting endotoxin-coagulated lysate with an ionic surface active suspending agent, generally a mixture of detergent and suspending agent.
