There is provided a fermentation apparatus that allows the separation of a wine, beer or other brewed or fermented beverage from its lees using a single container. The vessel can be used in wine making operation and is constructed so that the lees that settle out during fermentation may be mechanically trapped at the bottom of the vessel and the wine then removed, typically through a spigot, without contamination by the entrapped lees.

A spigot assembly for use in a fermentation vessel, such as the type used in wine making, is provided. The spigot assembly is of a multiple part construction such that it substantially avoids entrapment of either sediment or air in or on the assembly as the spigot operates to remove liquid from the vessel.

The invention relates to a filter device for use in diagnostic assay procedures for the effective separation of unwanted particulate matter from the liquid sample of an analyte. The device comprises plural sheet-like cappillary forms prepared from porous media, and that are able to receive and filter the liquid sample. The filter is so configured that, as the pores of the porous media become blocked, the liquid and any particulate matter contained therein are able to travel laterally, and then transversly, to unblocked regions of pores, thereby facilitating optimal speed and efficiency of sample processing. The invention extends to test kits for medical technologists that embody the filter device, and to corresponding methods of testing comprising the separation of particulate matter from samples such as body fluids and the like.

A connection system for connecting struts formed from paper or paper-like sheets rolled into a tube is made of cylindrical receptors and connectors. Each cylindrical receptor has an inside diameter approximately equal to or slightly smaller than the predetermined outside diameter of the tube for friction-fit engagement onto the end of the tube. Each cylindrical receptor also has a finger which is centrally disposed within the receptor, about the longitudinal axis thereof. At least a part of such finger is substantially the same size as the inside diameter of the tube. The finger is made of a plurality of longitudinal ribs extending radially from its longitudinal axis. Each receptor is press-fit engageable with a connector. Each connector is press-fit engageable with at least two receptors. The connection system allows for the connection of struts which can be readily constructed by the user of the construction system.

A fence structure is described consisting of modular panels mounted on posts. The modular panels are of thermoplastic or thermoset material having a rail portion and a connector at each end for fitting over the posts. The connector has an integral expansion joint in its central passage and each connector is offset in opposite directions to the longitudinal center of the panel to provide a hinged effect with the connectors of adjacent panels in the fence. The construction is readily adaptable to sloping ground and variation in height between panels and provides simplified installation by easy alignment.
