The present invention proposes a thermal inkjet printhead, as well as a printing assembly and printing apparatus comprising the same. The thermal inkjet printhead of the present invention comprises: a substrate; a nozzle layer, including a plurality of nozzles formed therethrough; a plurality of ink ejection chambers corresponding to the plurality of nozzles; a plurality of heater resistors formed on the substrate and corresponding to the plurality of ink ejection chambers, each of the heater resistors being located in a different one of the ink ejection chambers so that ink drop ejection through each of the nozzles is caused by heating of one of the heater resistors that is located in the corresponding ink ejection chamber; a plurality of separated cavitation islands formed on and corresponding to the plurality of heater resistors, each of the cavitation islands covering a different one of the heater resistors; and a dielectric layer interposed between the heater resistors and the cavitation islands. Using the present invention can help to enhance and substantially improve the printhead reliability, increasing in turn the yield of the manufacturing process.

The present invention provides a method for forming a thermal inkjet printhead, comprising at least the following steps: providing a semiconductor wafer including an integrated electronic circuit and a section for forming a thermal actuator element, the integrated circuit comprising at least: a thermal insulating layer formed over a substrate; and a first metal layer formed over the thermal insulating layer; wherein the first metal layer extends into the section for forming the thermal actuator element; and etching a section for forming a thermal actuator element to the first metal layer such that the first metal layer is acting as an etch stop layer. Further there is provided a thermal inkjet printhead formed by a method of the present invention and a semiconductor wafer for forming the thermal inkjet printheads by a method of the present invention.

The present application relates to a method of manufacturing an ink-jet printhead comprising: providing a silicon substrate () including active ejecting elements (); providing a hydraulic structure layer () for defining hydraulic circuits configured to enable a guided flow of ink; providing a silicon orifice plate () having a plurality of nozzles () for ejection of the ink; assembling the silicon substrate () with the hydraulic structure layer () and the silicon orifice plate (); wherein providing the silicon orifice plate () comprises: providing a silicon wafer () having a planar extension delimited by a first surface () and a second surface () on opposite sides of the silicon wafer (); performing a thinning step at the second surface () so as to remove from the second surface () a central portion () having a preset height (H), the silicon wafer () being formed, following the thinning step, by a base portion () having a planar extension and a peripheral portion () extending from the base portion (), transversally with respect to the planar extension of the base portion (); and forming in the silicon wafer () a plurality of through holes, each defining a respective nozzle () for ejection of the ink. Method of manufacturing an ink jet printhead

This invention relates to a method of inkjet printing, in particular for use in POS systems. In particular the printing method according to the invention is of the thermal type. In order to obtain high speed printing, for example of 15-20 lines per second when printing text on a paper medium 60-80 mm wide (for example receipts), the drops of ink ejected during the printing operation advantageously have a relatively large volume, i.e. not less than approximately 100 picoliters (pl) and preferably between 100 and 200 pl. The ink used for applications in POS systems must quickly penetrate an extensive range of paper media. This requirement is satisfied by using an ink having a surface tension of not more than approximately 35 dyne/cm (mN/m). Problems of stagnation and dripping of the ink caused by the printing conditions are overcome through the use of a nozzle plate coated with a wetting-resistant layer of silicon carbide. This coating material has proved to have non-wettability properties which do not significantly deteriorate during a printing operation over a long period of time.
