The invention is directed to a method and an apparatus for controlling the overrun mode of operation of an internal combustion engine, wherein instantaneous values of the relevant negative speed change of the internal combustion engine are sensed and evaluated to control the overrun mode. In this arrangement, a higher resume speed which is selected on commencement of the overrun mode and reduced to a lower speed limit after a predetermined time function, can be shifted additionally in dependence on the negative speed change. Further, to keep an internal combustion engine from stalling, the actual value of the negative speed change can be compared with a predetermined desired value; if it exceeds that value, the decision for a resume of fuel delivery can be made without delay.

An electronically controlled or regulated fuel metering system for an internal combustion engine having one sensor each for the air flow in the intake tube and for the throttle valve position is proposed. In accordance with the signals of these sensors, influence can be exerted upon at least one of the operating states of lambda regulation, full load and fuel quantity limitation. The fundamental concept is that not only the air flow rate signal or only the signal relating to an opened throttle valve should be evaluated as a full-load signal but that the full-load state is presumed to exist when, with the throttle valve opened, the air throughput in the intake tube simultaneously exceeds a predetermined value as well. The same condition applies to full-load enrichment. The overall result is cleaner exhaust gas.

A lambda regulating device is proposed for a fuel metering system in an internal combustion engine with externally supplied ignition. In addition to the regulation means which is already present, multiplicative and additive corrective variables are formed and are stored in non-transient memories. The regulating device enables an additive regulated shutoff of the additive lambda shift during idling and in the lower partial-load range, and it also enables regulation to a symmetrical distance on the part of the regulating manipulation from the limitation. The additive correction may be selected to be in accordance with rpm. Finally, the reference variables for the corrective value may be selected depending upon the air throughput in the intake tube of the engine. With a view to realization of the invention by means of a computer, individual flow diagrams relating to the mode of operation are given in the drawings.

An apparatus for the temperature control of a resistor used for measurement purposes, in particular, in combination with air flow rate measurement purposes, in particular, in combination with air flow rate measuring devices in internal combustion engines for a vehicle wherein the temperature of the resistor with current flowing through it is regulated during the measurement phase and in particular, operational states of the system provided with the apparatus and/or at particular times, the flow of current through the resistor is increased for the purpose of burning off dirt particles, which would falsify the measurement result, from the surface of the resistor which is formed, for example, as a hot wire. The apparatus includes a memory for picking up a signal such as whether a particular engine temperature is present at the beginning of one operational cycle or not and when this temperature is present, a red-hot heating procedure is omitted when the engine is subsequently turned off. In addition, the increase in current for initiating the red-hot heating procedure may also be controlled in accordance with operational duration and driving distance of the vehicle and in accordance with time.

There is described a method and an apparatus for use with the fuel preparation system of an internal combustion engine, for example, a fuel injection system which operates injection valves with electrical control pulses. When the gas pedal of a vehicle is actuated abruptly, the air flow measuring device of such systems is subject to oscillations around its equilibrium point, and the initial one of these swings is used to cause enrichment of the fuel-air mixture. The return swing generates an undesired lean signal which is suppressed by a 'damping circuit'. In addition, there is provided mixture enriching during steady applications of the gas pedal by means of a time-decaying enrichment signal generated by a slow acting circuit which operates in superposition to the action of the damping circuit. Both circuits may be suppressed by a blocking circuit during certain engine conditions, for example, during engine starting and engine overrunning as well as on the basis of temperature.

In order to prevent undesirable abrupt changes in engine torque when the fuel supply to the engine is shut off at the onset of engine braking, the invention provides the gradual decrease of the amount of fuel supplied to the engine beginning with the onset of engine braking and continuing until fuel has decreased to approximately 80 percent of the normal amount at which time the fuel is shut off entirely. When engine braking stops or when the operator indicates a demand for acceleration, the fuel supply is initiated at the level of approximately 80 percent of normal and is increased thereafter up to the normal amount according to a second selectable function of time.

A fuel injection installation for internal combustion engines having a plurality of injection valves for supplying fuel to the engine. Each injection valve is sealed to fuel distributing line and to either the intake manifold of the engine, or to the cylinder head of the engine, by at least one O-ring, each O-ring being braced only in the radial direction. Each injection valve is fixed in an axial direction on the fuel distributing line by means of a fastening plate yielding in the radial direction and embodied as bracket-like, which is insertable through appropriately shaped recesses in each insertion nipple on the fuel distributing line and can be snapped into an annular groove of each injection valve. As a result, there is assured not only a secure connection between the fuel distributing line and the injection valves which compensates for axial clearances required for manufacture, but also rapid mounting or dismounting of the fuel injection installation.

The fuel-air mixture preparation system of an internal combustion engine is engaged by signals from a plurality of oxygen sensors located in the exhaust system of the engine. More than one sensor is provided to improve the quality of the output signals in unfavorable engine operation. The individual sensors are provided with comparators which make a comparison between the sensor output and a set-point signal. The output signals from the comparators are fed to a logically controlled coupling circuit which presents them in cyclic alternation to an integrating control circuit which provides a control signal to the final control element in the fuel mixture preparation system for changing the fuel-air ratio. The coupling circuit may also provide a signal based on the logical states of the individual sensor signals.

Method and apparatus for fuel-air mixture control

An electrically controlled fuel injection apparatus is proposed which serves to control an internal combustion engine. The electrically controlled fuel injection apparatus comprises at least one injection valve which is opened via an electronic control apparatus in accordance with operational characteristics of the engine, at least one temperature-sensitive element which is in communication with the electronic control apparatus for the purpose of influencing the fuel injection quantity and one supplementary air valve disposed within a lateral channel which bypasses the throttle valve in the intake manifold, which supplementary air valve has a movable valve member which is actuatable against a return force by means of a member operating in accordance with temperature for the purpose of opening more or less widely the cross-sectional area of the lateral channel, whereby an electric heating device which is capable of being switched on when ignition impulses are present is attached to at least a portion of the temperature-dependent member, and the temperature-sensitive element is disposed within the supplementary air valve, in particular upon a bimetallic spring of the supplementary air valve which acts as the member which operates in dependence on temperature, for the purpose of influencing the fuel injection quantity. By means of this disposition of the temperature-sensitive element, a temperature-controlled and/or time-controlled enrichment of the fuel-air mixture takes place during the warm-up phase of the internal combustion engine.

Electrically controlled fuel injection apparatus

A fuel injection system is proposed for internal combustion engines having a plurality of injection valves for supplying fuel to the engine. Each injection valve is connected by a yieldable support bracket with a rigid fuel distributor line. The bracket is mounted pivotally with an annular coller secured to the injection valve. The fuel distributor line is arranged to engage rib-like carrier members connected with the internal combustion engine and is held against the carrier member by yielding clamp elements. After the valves are engaged in the sockets of the fuel distributor line and the bore of the cylinder head, then the support brackets are swung upwardly to tension the seal elements that are disposed in proximity to the opposite ends of the valve. As a result, not only a more secure connection between the fuel distributor line and the injection valves is obtained, but also rapid assembly or disassembly of the fuel injection system.

Fuel injection system

The cyclic control pulses for actuating the fuel injection valves of an internal combustion engine are extended during engine starting at low temperatures. The degree of pulse extension, i.e. of fuel enrichment, is made dependent on engine temperature and decreases as a function of cranking time. In addition, a repeated starting attempt will be accompanied by reduced pulse extension to prevent excessive enrichment of the mixture. The pulse extension may also be retained for a period of time after engine cranking to insure smooth running.

The fuel mixture preparation system of an internal combustion engine, especially a continuous fuel injection system, is engaged during intended engine accelerations by a pressure sensor in the induction manifold which responds to increasing manifold pressure to close a switch. The switch closure affects a pressure control valve that changes the control pressure in the fuel injection system and thereby causes temporary fuel enrichment until the differential pressure in the pressure sensor has returned to equilibrium. The signal from the pressure sensor may be extended arbitrarily by interposition of an electronic timing circuit which is constructed as an integrating circuit so that its output signal, when processed by a comparator, will produce a proportionally extended actuation signal for the control valve.

A fuel supply and metering valve assembly used for fuel injection to an internal combustion engine includes a control pressure circuit which determines the restoring force on the movable valve member of the metering valve. The magnitude of the control pressure, and hence the fuel quantity metered out by the valve assembly, can be altered by intermittent actuation of a pressure relief valve whose duty cycle is controlled by an oxygen sensor located in the exhaust line of the engine. The oxygen sensor voltage is superimposed on a sawtooth voltage at the input of a control circuit which varies the duty cycle of the bypass valve. When the oxygen sensor is too cold to generate an output signal, the control circuit is provided with a temporary control signal supplied by a timing circuit until the oxygen sensor has reached its normal temperature and generates an output signal.
