An optical isomer having an optical rotation degree of (+) from among (.+-.)-.alpha.-2,6-dimethyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dica rboxylic acid-3-(1-benzyl-3-piperidyl) ester-5-methyl ester, the hydrochloride of which has melting points ranging from 196.degree. to 202.degree. C.; or a salt thereof is described as being suitable for use in a pharmaceutical composition having hypotensive activity.

1,4-Dihydropyridine derivatives

Compounds having coronary and vasodilator effects, a hypotensive effect, and useful as antianginal drugs and drugs for treating hypertension are represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different groups and each represents a lower alkyl group, one of R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 represents a lower alkyl group and the other represents a group of the general formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.5 represents an aralkyl group or an acyl group and n represents 0 or an integer of 1-3; the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof are also effective therapeutic compounds.

A new piperidine derivative represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is oxygen, sulfur, carbonyl, hydroxymethylene or methylene; R.sub.1 is straight-chain alkylene having 1-4 carbon atoms with or without lower alkyl substituent(s); (A).sub.m and R.sub.2 are usually used substituents; and Y is a monovalent group or a divalent group and is one of the following three groups: ##STR2## wherein when p is 0, B is --N.dbd.N--, ##STR3## and when p is 1, B is ##STR4## wherein (R.sub.3).sub.n is a usually used substituent, has hypotensive activity.

Hypotensive piperidine derivatives

A new piperidine derivative represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is oxygen, sulfur, carbonyl, hydroxymethylene or methylene; R is straight-chain alkylene having 1-4 carbon atoms with or without lower alkyl substituent(s); m and n are 0 or 1, and are different from each other (i.e., both m and n are not 0 or 1); and (D).sub.m', R.sup.1 and (R.sup.2)n' are usually used as substituents, has a hypotensive activity.
