Quorum-sensing bacteria communicate with extracellular signal molecules called autoinducers to allow community-wide synchronization of gene expression. The present invention relates to the identification theandprotein Hfq as mediating interactions between small, regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) and specific messenger RNA (mRNA) targets. Accordingly, the present invention provides nucleic acids encoding thesRNAs, strains having various deletions and mutations of one or more qrr genes encoding these sRNA as well as methods of identifying quorum-sensing regulators. Additionally, the invention relates to an isolatedHfq protein and conservative amino acid substitutions thereof as well as nucleic acids encoding those proteins, recombinant methods of producing those proteins and antibodies against those proteins.

Small RNAs and bacterial strains involved in quorum sensing

A quantum-dot cascade laser which eliminates undesirable single phonon decays associated with quantum-well devices. The elimination of single phonon decays is realized by a three-dimensional confinement resulting in a several-order-of-magnitude reduction in the threshold current. Vertical radiative transitions are employed within single quantum dots contained by Bragg reflectors. Dot size, dot density and dot uniformity requirements are presented along with several embodiments.

A non-magnetic magnetoresistive head for reading a magnetic pattern stored as domains in tracks on a storage device uses as the sensor a wafer of a high electron mobility non-magnetic semiconductor, such as indium antimonide or mercury-cadmium telluride, which includes an electrode configuration that includes an inner stripe electrode and an outer rectangular electrode surrounding the inner electrode. The wafer is supported so that the plane of the wafer is parallel to the disk and perpendicular to the magnetic field being sensed.
