An improved electrical interconnect is formed wherein a dielectric material having a controllable characteristic is applied to at least a portion of the interconnect. The controllable characteristic of the dielectric material is selectively adjustable so that the impedance of the electrical interconnect is substantially matched to at least one impedance at first and second ends of the interconnect. In this manner, an electrical discontinuity between the first and second ends of the electrical interconnect is reduced, thereby improving an electrical performance of the interconnect.

An apparatus for data transfer using radio frequency (RF) energy, includes a first software application that sources and links the data transfer, a second software application for controlling a communications hardware for the data transfer, a hardware device for formatting the data and gaining access to a media, and a physical layer interface hardware, coupled to selectively receive a signal representing the data from the hardware device and to provide an output to the hardware device, for sending and receiving a radio frequency communication. The second software application for controlling the communications hardware uses a target data transmission media of infrared light.

Low-cost radio frequency (RF) link for point-to-point data transfer

A call path display telephone system includes an establishment telephone and a user telephone. The establishment telephone includes a memory, communication module and controller. The user telephone includes a memory, microphone, speaker, keypad, communication module, controller, and a visual input/output module. The desired menu options for a call path are visually displayed to a user to allow the user to more rapidly and efficiently navigate through the call path menu. Unlike prior-art voice based systems, it is not necessary to sequentially listen to all available options; they can be rapidly viewed visually and selected as desired. A method of communicating call path menu data from an establishment to a user includes placing a telephone call from a user telephone of the user to an establishment telephone of the establishment, downloading the call path menu data from the establishment, visually displaying the call path menu data to the user, and then having the establishment accept a selection from the user in response to the visual display of the call path menu data.

A connector for a portable device, includes a jack portion integral to the portable device, and a plug portion attached to an input/output device for being inserted into the jack portion. The connector is preferably a low cost microwave connector for transmitting multiple signal types and provides dual functionability.

Microwave connector

A cordless modem comprises a radio pair interfaced to a standard data/fax modem which allows a user of a personal computer to wirelessly connect to a telephone line. One end of the radio pair is a remote unit interfaced to the modem contained within the PC while the other end is a base unit connected to a standard telephone wall jack. The base unit can selectively discriminate and adjust for signals received from a telephone voice handset or data signals received from the cordless modem remote unit. Upon receiving an off-hook signal or an incoming call signal, the base unit identifies the type of data (i.e., voice or computer modem data) and adapts accordingly by placing an FM modulator in either of a narrow band deviation or a wide band deviation covering the required range of the particular signal combined with local echo. That is, when voice data is present, a low deviation, narrow filter combination is selected. If, on the other hand, the computer data from the cordless modem is detected, a higher deviation, wider bandwidth filter is selected. In addition, the remote unit switches a pre-detection filter from one mode to another depending on whether it is connected to a computer modem or to a voice handset. Security from eavesdroppers as well as the mitigation of signal fading is provided by overlaying a pseudo-random number (PN) code on the FM modulated signal.

Cordless connection for a data/fax modem

Disclosed is a dipole array antenna that is particularly useful at UHF and microwave frequencies. In an exemplary embodiment, the antenna is comprised of two dipole radiating elements--a driven dipole of length L1 and an unfed element closely spaced from the driven element, of length L2. The ratio L1/L2 is at least 1.1, and may be optimally set at about 1.3. Preferably, at a reference frequency in which VSWR is minimum, the length L2 of the unfed element is less than 0.45 wavelengths, and optimally, is in the range of 0.39-0.42 wavelengths, with dipole spacing in the range of 0.07 to 0.11 wavelengths at the reference frequency. Advantageously, the antenna exhibits a low VSWR in a 50 ohm system over an operating frequency band, whereby a matching network can be avoided. High gain and front-to-back ratio is also realizable while antenna size is kept small.

Closely coupled directional antenna

A cordless modem comprises a radio pair interfaced to a standard data/fax modem which allows a user of a personal computer to wirelessly connect to a telephone line. One end of the radio pair is a remote unit interfaced to the modem contained within the PC while the other end is a base unit connected to a standard telephone wall jack. This arrangement allows the user the convenience and freedom of using a PC, laptop, personal digital assistant, etc., within several hundred feet of a phone jack without being encumbered by a cord. A warning alarm on the remote unit informs the user when the signal strength between the radio pair is below a threshold value. Additionally, the base unit may be equipped with two spatially separated antennas to help mitigate the effects of signal fading.

Cordless communication system for a portable computer modem

The invention is a novel antenna configuration that has a substantially smaller size than existing antennas tuned to a given frequency. Compact size is provided without substantial loss in performance, making the antenna particularly suitable for hand-held devices. An antenna in accordance with the invention is preferably situated on an FR4 substrate, and includes a dipole having first and second pairs of copper radiating strips, one pair on each of the top and bottom surfaces of the substrate. Each radiating strip in a pair has a copper conductive strip coupled thereto, the strip of one radiating element being situated on the same surface of the substrate as the respective strip, with the conducting element of the other radiating strip being disposed on the opposite surface of the substrate. The effect of the configuration is to lengthen the radiating strips without an increase in substrate dimensions, thereby allowing tuning to low frequencies for a given substrate size. An on-board matching network includes adjustable capacitance and inductance to match the impedance of the antenna with that of a connector coupled to an off-substrate transceiver. A preferred implementation for a 900 MHz antenna is described.

Omnidirectional dipole antenna

The antenna is a hybrid microstrip and reflector antenna having a planar patch antenna mounted to an upper surface of an insulated planar substrate. The substrate is coupled to a ground plane by one or more insulated couplers so as to form an airgap therebetween. A coaxial cable connectable to a transceiver is coupled to the bottom surface of the ground plane at the outer conductor thereof and the inner conductor is coupled to a feed pin which passes through the ground plane and protrudes through the surface of the patch. The feed pin is secured to the patch by soldering.
