This invention provide processes for producing carboxylic acid product, along with useful salts. The carboxylic acid product that is produced according to this invention is preferably a C-Ccarboxylic acid. Among the salts produced in the process of the invention are ammonium salts.

Production of carboxylic acid and salt co-products

This invention is directed to methods of obtaining a high quantity of desired acid salt in a form that is relatively easy to recover. Particularly desired as a recovery product is an organic acid. A salt form of the desired organic acid is formed that is relatively high in concentration and that is relatively soluble in an aqueous medium. The method includes a step of fermenting a fermentable carbon source in the fermentation medium in the presence of a magnesium compound containing oxygen.

Disclosed are recombinant microorganisms for producing organic acids. The recombinant microorganisms express a polypeptide that has the enzymatic activity of an enzyme that is utilized in the pentose phosphate cycle. The recombinant microorganism may include recombinantthat has been transformed to express a Zwischenferment (Zwf) gene. The recombinant microorganisms may be useful in fermentation processes for producing organic acids such as succinic acid and lactic acid. Also disclosed are novel plasmids that are useful for transforming microorganisms to produce recombinant microorganisms that express enzymes such as Zwf.

A fermentation process for making succinic acid in high concentrations employs a bacteria obtained from the rumen contents of cattle. A preferred bacteria is Bacterium 130Z (ATCC No. 55618).

A method for producing succinic acid in high concentration by fermentation employs a variant of strain 130Z which is resistant to concentrations of about 1 g/l to about 8 g/l of sodium monofluoroacetate. The variant produces succinic acid in concentrations of about 80 g/l to about 110 g/l and the fermentation product contains less formic and acetic acids than the product obtained using the parent strain under identical conditions. A method for making succinic acid employs a fluoroacetate resistant variant of Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens. The fluoroacetate variant produces a succinic acid product which contains less acetic acid than the product obtained using the parent strain under identical conditions. A preferred variant FA-10 is obtained from A. succiniciproducens (ATCC No. 29305). A method of obtaining the variant also is described.
