In one embodiment described herein, a graphics engine with shader unit thread load balancing functionality executes shader instructions from multiple execution threads in a smaller number of execution threads by combining instructions from multiple threads at runtime. In one embodiment, multiple shader unit threads containing less than a minimum number of instructions are combined to minimize the discrepancy between the shortest and longest thread. In one embodiment, threads are merged when they contain a common output register.

Load balancing and merging of tessellation thread workloads

A graphics engine with shader unit thread serializing and instance unrolling functionality that executes multi-threaded shader logic in a single hardware thread is described. Hardware accelerated tessellation functionality is implemented utilizing programmable pipeline stages that allow custom, runtime configuration of graphics hardware utilizing programs compiled from a high level shader language that are executed using one or more shader execution cores. In one embodiment, multiple shader unit program threads are serialized to run in one hardware thread to allow a greater number of instructions to be executed on the shader cores and preserve hardware threads for primitive processing by other shader units.

Shader serialization and instance unrolling

A modular device includes a first printed circuit board and a wireless transceiver (e.g., a radio). Electrical connectors (e.g., pads) are located along multiple edges of the first printed circuit board. The electrical connectors are in locations that correspond to a land pattern on a second printed circuit board. Along one edge of the first printed circuit board, the electrical connectors also correspond to electrical connections in a socket. For certification testing, for example, the device can be plugged into a socket. For installation in a host device, the device can be soldered down to the second printed circuit board.

Module that can be used as a plug-in module and as a solder-down module

An ambient country identifier (ACI) signal can be used to automatically provide location awareness for a WLAN device. If an ACI signal is detected, then the WLAN device can configure itself to comply with channel and power settings for the country having the detected ACI signal. After detection of the ACI signal, the WLAN device can be 'locked' to the country having that ACI signal, thereby ensuring legal operation of the WLAN device even after subsequent restarts. If an ACI signal is not detected, then the WLAN device can be configured in a default mode, e.g. an 'open mode' in which end users can configure the WLAN device by entering a country of operation or a &#x201c;common mode&#x201d; in which the channel and transmit power settings meet global spectrum usage requirements.

Implementing location awareness in WLAN devices

A wireless communications device is configurable to communicate with either one of two networks over a wireless medium, each of the two networks having a different air interface protocol. Additionally, the wireless device includes stored provisioning information for a set of networks of a first type and can map this first provisioning information into a second format for use with networks of a second type. The device also includes a non-volatile memory for storing default provisioning information so that some information remains available regardless of what is erased from the memory. The default provisioning information is enough to establish a connection over one of the available networks and allow reconstruction of a provisioning list.

Method and system for mapping provisioning information of different communications networks

In a wireless communication system, a method and apparatus of communicating between at least one base station and a core network is claimed. Signaling messages and voice streams are transported using packet-switched protocols (IP). A CIC field (Circuit Identity Code) is used to identify at least one VoIP streams. The CIC field may be interpreted as a UDP port number for the voice over IP stream. Also, a synchronization source or contributing source filed of a RTP header may be used as the CIC field.

Core network interoperability in a pico cell system

An apparatus and method of effecting hand-off of a mobile station in a first wireless communication system, which has a first mobile switching node operable with a first base station and a second mobile switching node operable with a second base station, and a second wireless communication system, is claimed. A handoff required message is received at the first mobile switching node, and sent to a second mobile switching node. A message from the second mobile switching node is sent to request allocation for a handoff. In an embodiment, this message is sent to the VLR of the second wireless communication system. In response, a handoff request acknowledge message is received by the second mobile switching node and sent to the first mobile switching node. An initial address message is sent to initiate a circuit connection between the first mobile switching node and the second mobile switching node. Then, the call is received from the first mobile switching node.

Handover in a hybrid communications network

A method for performing a soft handoff, including establishing a first control channel via a network between a first BSC and a first BTS. The method also includes establishing a second control channel via the network between a second BSC and a second BTS. A call between a mobile station (MS) and the first BTS is established, and while the call continues an indication is sent to the first BSC that the MS has received a signal from the second BTS. In response to the indication, a trigger is conveyed from the first BSC to the second BTS, and, in response to receiving the trigger at the second BTS, further traffic associated with the call is directed between the MS, the second BTS, and the first BSC, without conveying the further traffic through the second BSC.

Methods and apparatus for inter-BSC soft handoff

A method of effecting handoff of a mobile station from a first base station in a first cellular communications system controlled by a first mobile switching control station to a second base station in a second, different cellular system controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises generating at the second cellular communication system an authentication code as the result of applying an algorithm to a private key assigned to the mobile station for the second cellular communications system and a random number generated by the second cellular communications system. An authentication code is also generated at the first cellular communication system as the result of applying an algorithm to the private key and the random number. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communication system is then transmitted to a mobile station in a data packet, and, from there, the authentication code is transmitted to the second cellular communication system. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communications system is then compared with the authentication code generated at the second cellular communications system.
