A method includes capturing a first image of the sample via a detector, wherein the particles of the primary particle beam have a first average energy so that the interaction products detected by the detector predominantly contain sample information from a sample layer lying below the sample surface. The method also includes removing the outermost sample layer with the aid of the cutting device, and capturing a second image of the sample via the detector, wherein the particles of the primary particle beam have a second average energy so that the interaction products detected by the detector predominantly contain sample information from the surface layer of the sample. The method further includes calculating the lateral shift/lateral offset of the sample from a comparison of the first and second images, and compensating for the lateral offset.

Method for avoiding artefacts during serial block face imaging

A charged particle source comprises at least one gas inlet configured to supply gas particles, at least one tip having a tip apex being biased to provide an electrical field for generating charged particles, and at least one ionization area to which gas particles are supplied. The gas particles are ionized in the ionization area due to the electrical field. Additionally, the charged particle source comprises at least one first electrode configured to accelerate charged particles and at least one light emitting device providing a light beam. The light beam is focused to a focus point in the ionization area, specifically, to a focus volume such that the ionization area is at least partly positioned in the focus volume. The ionization area is arranged between the tip apex and the first electrode. The distance between the ionization area and the tip apex may be from 0.1 nm to 1 nm.

Charged particle source

A particle beam microscope includes an illumination system generating a particle beam having a ring-shaped conical configuration. A selective detection system is configured to selectively detect one of two groups of particles having traversed the object region. The first group of particles includes the particles that traversed the object region un-scattered or scattered by a small scattering amount. The second group of particles includes particles scattered in the object region by a greater scattering amount.
