A variable turbine geometry assembly is provided for controlling flow of exhaust gas to a turbine wheel of a turbocharger. The variable turbine geometry assembly includes a base structure, vanes, vane levers, and an adjustment ring. The vanes are distributed circumferentially around the base structure and are pivotable relative to the base structure to vary an effective inlet area. The vane levers are for pivoting the vanes. The vane levers each include an inner portion coupled to one of the vanes and an outer portion extending from the inner portion. The adjustment ring is selectively rotatable about a central axis to pivot the vanes. The adjustment ring includes apertures that are each associated with and have received therein the outer portion of one of the vane levers. The outer portion of each of the vane levers includes an outer surface that is non-parallel with the central axis.

A variable geometry turbine turbocharger () includes a gear driven adjustment ring actuator mechanism () supported within a housing () via a resilient mount () disposed between the mechanism () and housing (). The gear driven adjustment ring actuator mechanism () rotates an adjustment ring (), which in turn adjusts the position of the vanes () of the variable geometry turbine (). The resilient mount () accommodates the heat-related expansion and contraction of the gear driven adjustment ring actuator mechanism ().

A turbocharger comprising: a turbine wheel; a compressor wheel; a shaft member connecting the turbine wheel and the compressor wheel, the shaft member, turbine wheel, and compressor wheel being located along the same longitudinal axis; and a varying geometric technology system comprising a first guide ring member, a second guide ring member, a plurality of rotatable guide vane members positioned between the first and second guide ring members and in a substantially circular arrangement at a first radius from the longitudinal axis, and a plurality of spacer members also positioned between the first and second guide ring members, and located between the longitudinal axis and the circular arrangement of guide vane members.

A variable turbine geometry turbine turbocharger () includes a vane pack () disposed in the exhaust gas path upstream of the turbine wheel (). The vane pack () includes vanes () that are rotatably supported between a pair of vane rings () and configured to adjustably control the flow of exhaust gas to the turbine wheel (). In addition, a retainer () secures the vane pack () to the bearing housing () in such a way that the vane pack () is mechanically decoupled from the turbine housing ().

A method of controlling a vehicle includes determining if a diesel emission fluid is at least partially frozen, and determining if the vehicle is currently operating in a low diesel emission fluid inducement protocol. If the vehicle is not currently operating in the low diesel emission fluid inducement protocol, and the diesel emission fluid is at least partially frozen, then a temporary minimum diesel emission fluid mass may be defined to prevent entry of the vehicle into the low diesel emission fluid inducement protocol.

A number of variations may include a method for increasing peak flow in a variable geometry turbine turbocharger comprising: by-passing fluid flow to a turbine impeller by forming at least one internal by-pass passage through at least one of a lower vane ring of a vane pack assembly or a turbine housing below the lower vane ring; providing a first end of a vane component within the at least one internal by-pass passage; and using the first end of the vane component as a rotary valve to control fluid flow through the at least one internal by-pass passage.

The method includes: selectively determining a fluid state from a plurality of fluid states based on a temperature of a fluid supply source; estimating an average consumption rate based on the fluid state; and evaluating a fluid supply within the fluid supply source based on the average consumption rate.

A method is provided for detecting a level of diesel-exhaust-fluid (DEF) in a reservoir that is operatively connected to a catalyst for a diesel engine. The method is employed in a vehicle in order to facilitate a refill of the reservoir. The method includes sensing a level of diesel fuel in a fuel tank via a sensor operatively connected to the tank. The method also includes determining whether the vehicle is on an incline using the sensed level of diesel fuel in the fuel tank. The method additionally includes determining the level of DEF in the reservoir if the vehicle is determined to be substantially not on an incline. A system is also provided for detecting a level of DEF in the reservoir.

An engine control system comprises an oxygen comparison module and a regeneration control module. The oxygen comparison module compares an oxygen concentration of an exhaust gas of an engine to an oxygen threshold. A regeneration control module initiates regeneration of a particulate filter and controls regeneration based on the oxygen comparison and at least one of a particulate filter load, a particulate filter temperature, and a speed of the engine.
