A two-stroke internal combustion engine has two cylinders each having an exhaust port. Two exhaust conduits are connected to the two exhaust ports. A passage is provided between the two conduits to fluidly communicate the two together. An actuator moves a valve to open or close the passage depending on the engine speed.

A reciprocating pump includes a drive section and a pump section. The drive section has a reciprocating coil assembly to which alternating polarity control signals are applied during operation. A permanent magnet structure of the drive section creates a magnetic flux field which interacts with an electromagnetic field produced during application of the control signals to the coil. Depending upon the polarity of the control signals applied to the coil, the coil is driven in one of two directions of movement. A drive member transfers movement of the coil to a pump element which reciprocates with the coil to draw fluid into a pump chamber and expel the fluid during each pump cycle. The pump is particularly well suited to cyclic pumping applications, such as fuel injection systems for internal combustion engines.

A reciprocating pump includes a drive section and a pump section. The drive section has a reciprocating coil assembly to which alternating polarity control signals are applied during operation. A permanent magnet structure of the drive section creates a magnetic flux field which interacts with an electromagnetic field produced during application of the control signals to the coil. The coil assembly includes a drive member that drives a plunger assembly having a plunger and a valve stem movably interfitted within the plunger and having a lower poppet head. As the plunger is driven downwardly the plunger contacts the poppet head to drive it into the pump chamber to force the fluid therefrom. There is a gap between the poppet head and the plunger so that the initial downward movement of the plunger closes the gap to gain momentum before it contacts the poppet head and drives it downwardly.

State-of-the-art fuel injectors have an inherent time delay that is determined by an elapsed time from the time an electrical signal is received by the fuel injector from an ECU to the time that fuel is actually initially injected into the cylinder. That time is currently an average time and therefore the fuel injectors must be manufactured with very precise tolerances. The present invention includes a method and apparatus that allows the use of production fuel injectors that are more economical to manufacture by allowing wider tolerances. The invention includes determining the actual time delay for each fuel injector. The fuel injectors are supplied with a computer program and a data file containing the time delay determined especially for that particular fuel injector.
