Photographic support materials are comprised of a conventional support, such as polyester film, cellulose acetate film or resin-coated paper, having thereon an antistatic layer comprising vanadium pentoxide and an overlying barrier layer comprised of a latex polymer having hydrophilic functionality. The barrier layer provides excellent adhesion between the antistatic layer and overlying layers, such as silver halide emulsion layers or curl control layers, and also prevents unwanted diffusion of the vanadium pentoxide; whereby the combination of antistatic and barrier layers serves to impart a high level of permanent antistatic protection.

A process of contacting two photographic elements by juxtaposing the elements and drawing a vacuum between them is described wherein at least one of the elements has been exposed and processed and comprises a support having thereon, as the outermost layer facing the other element, a matte layer comprising matte particles and a polymeric binder. This process is improved by utilizing as the matte layer a layer comprising less than about 1.08 g/m.sup.2 of binder and having matte particles that are present in an amount sufficient and have a mean diameter great enough so that the outermost layer has a roughness measurement, R.sub.a as defined by ANSI Standard B46.1 1985, of greater than about 1.00 microinches.

A fusing roller of the type having a thin resistance heating layer near its surface has a core made of a thermally and electrically insulative material, such as glass, which has a coefficient of thermal expansion comparable to that of the resistance heating layer. The roller can then withstand a high temperature curing process for other layers without separation of the resistance layer from the core.
