Disclosed herein are embodiments of a composition for use in forming films or coatings that prevent damage in foodstuffs, including plants, fruits, and vegetables. The disclosed compositions comprise a cellulose nanomaterial and can further comprise a nanoscale mineral compound and one or more additional components. Also disclosed are films or coatings made using the disclosed compositions, as well as methods for making the disclosed compositions and methods for using the disclosed compositions.

Nano-cellulose coatings to prevent damage in foodstuffs

Disclosed herein are embodiments of a composition comprising at least one cellulose material (such as a cellulose nanomaterial) and an optional inorganic salt component. Some embodiments of the composition can further comprise additional components, with some embodiments further comprising a non-starch polysaccharide (e.g., methyl cellulose carboxymethyl cellulose or other cellulose derivative, chitosan, or the like), a surfactant, a plasticizer, an antimicrobial component, or any combination thereof. The disclosed compositions are useful for forming edible coatings/films on plants, plant parts, and other objects. The disclosed compositions and coatings/films made using the compositions are effective at protecting fresh and processed produce and other substances and products, from various different types of food processing damage (and the deleterious effects associated therewith).

Methods for determining chlorophyll content comprise providing a sample, subjecting the sample to light at a first wavelength and detecting a first wavelength response, subjecting the sample to light at a second wavelength and detecting a second wavelength response, and calculating a chlorophyll content of the sample based on at least the first wavelength response and the second wavelength response. Optional approaches include detecting the nitrogen content and/or water content of the sample. Associated apparatus for determining chlorophyll content, which may comprise a handheld device, is also disclosed.

Portable meter to measure chlorophyll, nitrogen and water and methods

A plurality of systems and/or apparatuses for use in delivering liquid where desired, such as for watering agronomic or household plants. A reservoir housing is disclosed that has an egress opening and retains liquid by vacuum pressure. Capillary material is preferably provided at or near the egress opening for controlled delivery of liquid and to assist in establishing a regulatable seal at the egress opening. Several embodiments with both different and common components and features are disclosed.

Vacuum reservoir liquid delivery apparatus

A liquid composition is applied to a plant to provide a barrier to water vapor transmission. The composition dries to form a film on the surface of the plant. The film inhibits water loss and thereby increases the survival likelihood and quality of the plant. A particularly suitable coating composition comprises: from about forty to about ninety-five weight percent of a vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride polymer; from about 1.0 to about 2.0 weight percent of a coalescing agent such as 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate; about 0.5 to about 1.0 weight percent of a surfactant such as a polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene copolymer; about 0.5 to about 1.0 weight percent of a viscosity increasing agent such as a urethane copolymer; and from about 0.3 to about 1.0 weight percent of a defoaming agent, such as silica.
