To identify a cytochrome P450 involved in the detoxification and metabolism of a specific growth inhibitor. Provided is a gene encoding a cytochrome P450 classified into Indica rice-derived CYP72A31, comprising a polynucleotide encoding a protein comprising an amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 2.

Disclosed is a gene coding for a protein (a) or (b) showing a high level of resistance to PC herbicides or sulfonylurea herbicides. The protein (a) consists of an amino acid sequence of any one of SEQ ID NOS: 2, 4, 6 and 8, and the protein (b) consists of an amino acid sequence derived from the amino acid sequence of any one of SEQ ID NOS: 2, 4, 6 and 8 by substitution, deletion or addition of at least one or more amino acids, has resistance to a pyrimidinyl carboxy herbicide, and has acetolactate synthase activity.

The present invention provides a method for assessing sensitivity of a rice blast fungus to a scytalone dehydratase inhibitor, comprising the steps of: (a) and (b), which (a) identifies an amino acid in an amino acid sequence of a scytalone dehydratase isolated from the rice blast fungus, where the amino acid corresponds to valine at position 75 of SEQ ID NO: 4; and (b) assesses the sensitivity of the rice blast fungus to the scytalone dehydratase inhibitor, where if the amino acid identified in step (a) is methionine, the sensitivity of the rice blast fungus to The scytalone dehydratase inhibitor is assessed to be lower than that of a wild-type rice blast fungus which endogenously produces the scytalone dehydratase of SEQ ID NO: 4.

The present invention provides a gene that can be used extensively in studies relating to resistant rice blast fungi. The present invention provides a gene encoding ALS protein which shows a extremely high level of resistance to pyrimidinyl carboxy herbicides. The gene of the present invention encodes an acetolactate synthase protein, for instance, according to SEQ ID NO:1, where the acetolactate synthase protein has resistance to a pyrimidinyl carboxy herbicide and has acetolactate synthase activity.
