The invention relates to the use of solid betaine for de-icing and/or preventing slipperiness. The solid betaine comprises at least one non-betaine compound affecting water and/or moisture movement in said solid betaine. The invention further relates to a process for the manufacture of solid betaine. A suspension comprising betaine crystals is prepared from a feed liquid and the betaine crystals are separated and washed. The amount of wash liquid is adjusted in order to leave 0.5 to 10 w-% of at least one non-betaine compound in said solid betaine.

Use of solid betaine product and method for its manufacture

The invention relates to removing crystallization inhibitors from a solution comprising one or more reducing sugars by nanofiltration, hydrolysis and/or chromatography. The reducing sugars are typically selected from fructose and xylose.

Crystallization of sugars

The invention relates to the recovery of deoxy sugars, such as fucose from biomass-derived solutions, such as spent liquors obtained from pulping processes. The invention is based on the use of chromatographic fractionation with specific column packing materials and combinations thereof. The deoxy sugar product obtained from the chromatographic fractionation may be further purified by crystallization. The invention also provides a novel crystalline fucose product and a novel process for the crystallization of fucose.

The present invention relates to the production of xylitol. In particular, processes utilising L-xylose as an intermediate for xylitol production are described. Process for the production of xylitol

The invention relates to novel anhydrous (&#x3b2;) lactitol crystals, belonging to the orthorhombic P222cystal system and having unit cell constants a=9.6 &#x212b;, b=11.1 &#x212b;, c=14.0 &#x212b;. The invention also relates to crystalline lactitol products containing the novel anhydrous &#x3b2; lactitol and to a process for the preparation thereof by crystallizing from an aqueous solution of lactitol. The novel anhydrous &#x3b2; lactitol is stable and nonhygroskopic and it may be used as a substitute for sugar in foodstuffs and sweets, in as well as in pharmaceutical and hygienic products.

Anhydrous lactitol crystals, a product containing the same and a process for the preparation thereof as well as use thereof

The invention relates to a process for the hard panning of chewable cores in a pan or drum wherein a syrup of a crystallizable sugar or polyol is intermittently sprayed over a bed of the cores and the cores are dried between sprayings with a flow of air. The speed and efficiency of the panning process is increased by controlling the drying of the cores between sprayings by controlling parameters of the drying air in such a way as to intentionally leave a substantial residual moisture in the drying coating layer at the start of a subsequent spraying phase. The chewable products are preferably xylitol coated chewing gums.

Process for hard panning of chewable cores and cores produced by the process

The invention relates to a process for the crystallization of substances having a narrow metastable supersaturation zone. In the process the saturation of a solution is gradually increased and the solution is seeded for the crystallization. The seeding is performed at a seeding point which is selected in response to a signal received from said process indicating imminent or initial spontaneous nucleation. The process provides a good crystal yield and a crystalline product having a uniform crystal structure and a narrow crystal size distribution.

Process for the crystallization of non-sucrose substances

The invention relates to a chromatographic separation process of recovering mannose with high purity. The invention is based on the use of a chromatographic separation resin including a resin which is at least partly in a Ba form resin and a resin which is in other than Ba form.

Method for the recovery of sugars

The invention relates to a method of crystallizing maltitol from a maltitol solution by supersaturating the solution in repsect of maltitol and crystallizing the maltitol from the solution. In the process of the invention, the maltitol-containing solution is brought to a supersaturated state, and the solution is subjected to evaporation, until a crystallization mass is obtained which has a crystal yield of 1 to 80% on maltitol, and a dry solids content of over 50%. After bringing the solution to a supersaturated state, the solution is preferably seeded by adding maltitol seed crystals. In one embodiment of the invention, additional feed liquid is added during the crystallization by evaporation.

Method of crystallizing maltitol

The present invention relates to a process for the production of structurally pure lactitol crystal forms selected from the group consisting of anhydrous lactitol, lactitol monohydrate, lactitol dihydrate and lactitol trihydrate. The crystallization is performed by cooling a lactitol solution from a temperature at or slightly below the highest temperature of the stability area of the respective crystalline lactitol form to a temperature at or slightly above the lowest temperature of the stability area of said crystalline lactitol form, said stability areas being defined, respectively, within the temperature limits of 100&deg; C. and 0&deg; C. by the intersections of the solubility lines shown in FIG. 1, and by maintaining the supersaturation of said lactitol solution at a level of 1 to 8% (w/w) above the solubility line of the respective lactitol form crystallizing in said area.

The invention relates to a method of producing xylitol and erythritol from arabinoxylan-containing material. According to the invention, the arabinoxylan-containing material is hydrolyzed and xylose and arabinose are separated from the obtained hydrolysate, whereafter the xylose is reduced to xylitol, and the xylitol is recovered, and the arabinose is subjected to alkaline oxidation to obtain erythronic acid which is reduced to erythritol, and the erythritol is recovered.

The various crystallization methods include at least a cooling crystallization step wherein cooling is controlled so as to maintain a temperature difference between the solution and the cooling element of less than about 10&deg; C., and maintain supersaturation of the aqueous solution with respect to the saturated fructose at a ratio between 1.1 and 1.25, whereby optimum heat transfer and a fructose crystal growth rate of at least 0.008 mm/hr is achieved with little or no spontaneous crystal nucleation.

A process of preparing a L-ribose fraction having greater than 97% purity starting from an aqueous solution of L-arabinose is provided by utilizing an epimerization reaction conducted in the presence of a Mo compound and eluting the product formed by said epimerization reaction through a separation zone containing a strong acid cation exchange resin. A process of crystallized said L-ribose fraction under conditions effective to form monohydrate L-ribose crystals is also disclosed.
