An enhanced method and precision nanopositioning apparatus for implementing enhanced nanopositioning performance is provided. The nanopositioning apparatus includes a vertical linear nanopositioning flexure stage and a horizontal linear nanopositioning flexure stage. The vertical linear nanopositioning flexure stage includes a stage base, a symmetrically configured flexure linear guiding mechanism with precision motion enhancement structure, and a stage carriage. The horizontal linear nanopositioning flexure stage is mounted on the stage carriage of the vertical linear nanopositioning flexure stage, and includes a middle-bar relative position control mechanism to enhance the stiffness of a flexure linear guiding mechanism.

Method and precision nanopositioning apparatus with compact vertical and horizontal linear nanopositioning flexure stages for implementing enhanced nanopositioning performance

A method and apparatus for implementing an ultra-high stability long-vertical travel stage are provided. The ultra-high stability long-vertical travel stage includes a first wedge supporting a second wedge, each wedge formed of a selected stable material having predefined rigidity and low thermal expansion coefficient, and integrated air bearings. A linear guiding mechanism includes a plurality of flexures. The first wedge is driven in a plane providing vertical motion on the second wedge with the integrated air bearings lifted and the flexures allowing for movement.

Method and apparatus for implementing ultra-high stability long-vertical travel stage

An enhanced mechanical design of multiple zone plates precision alignment apparatus for hard x-ray focusing in a twenty-nanometer scale is provided. The precision alignment apparatus includes a zone plate alignment base frame; a plurality of zone plates; and a plurality of zone plate holders, each said zone plate holder for mounting and aligning a respective zone plate for hard x-ray focusing. At least one respective positioning stage drives and positions each respective zone plate holder. Each respective positioning stage is mounted on the zone plate alignment base frame. A respective linkage component connects each respective positioning stage and the respective zone plate holder. The zone plate alignment base frame, each zone plate holder and each linkage component is formed of a selected material for providing thermal expansion stability and positioning stability for the precision alignment apparatus.

Mechanical design of multiple zone plates precision alignment apparatus for hard X-ray focusing in twenty-nanometer scale

A multilayer Laue Lens includes a compensation layer formed in between a first multilayer section and a second multilayer section. Each of the first and second multilayer sections includes a plurality of alternating layers made of a pair of different materials. Also, the thickness of layers of the first multilayer section is monotonically increased so that a layer adjacent the substrate has a minimum thickness, and the thickness of layers of the second multilayer section is monotonically decreased so that a layer adjacent the compensation layer has a maximum thickness. In particular, the compensation layer of the multilayer Laue lens has an in-plane thickness gradient laterally offset by 90&#xb0; as compared to other layers in the first and second multilayer sections, thereby eliminating the strict requirement of the placement error.

Zone compensated multilayer laue lens and apparatus and method of fabricating the same

Enhanced mechanical designs are provided for weak-link rotary mechanisms for implementing angular rotations with a defined angular travel range and positioning resolution, for example, with ten-degree-level travel range and ten-nanoradian-level positioning resolution. A weak-link rotary structure has a predetermined pattern for implementing angular rotations with repeatable and reliable angular travel range and positioning resolution including a plurality of connecting links radially extending from a central portion with a predefined angular separation between the connecting links; each said connecting link having at least one pair of weak-link connections; alternate connecting links being coupled to a respective terminal, each said respective terminal being mounted to a connecting carriage; remaining other connecting links being coupled to a respective mounting portion of a mating part of the weak-link rotary structure.

Mechanical design of laminar weak-link rotary mechanisms with ten-degree-level travel range and ten-nanoradian-level positioning resolution

An enhanced mechanical design for laminar weak-link mechanisms with centimeter-level travel range and sub-nanometer positioning resolution is provided. A multiple parallelogram weak-link structure includes a predefined pattern of a plurality of perpendicularly arranged groups of connecting links, each link having at least one pair of weak-link connections. Each of the plurality of perpendicularly arranged groups includes a terminal for mounting to a fixed base. The multiple parallelogram weak-link structure includes a moving part for mounting on a carriage, providing precisely controlled movement with stability in one direction. A two-dimensional (2D) ultra-precision scanning stages assembly for x-ray nanoprobe applications includes multiple redundantly constrained weak-link structures, a vertical ultra-precision positioning stage, and a horizontal ultra-precision positioning stage.

Mechanical design of laminar weak-link mechanisms with centimeter-level travel range and sub-nanometer positioning resolution

A multidimensional alignment apparatus is provided for multidimensional aligning of two linear multilayer Laue lenses (MLLs) for two-dimensional hard X-ray focusing. The multidimensional alignment apparatus precisely aligns and ensures stability of two linear MLLs performing hard x-ray focusing. The multidimensional alignment apparatus includes a base, a lower stages group controlling a first upstream MLL, an upper stages group positioned over the lower stages group controlling a second downstream MLL and an upper stage support attached to the base. The lower stages group provides five degrees of freedom precision positioning adjustment for the first upstream MLL. The second downstream MLL is mounted on the upper stages group with three degrees of freedom adjustment capability.

Multidimensional alignment apparatus for hard x-ray focusing with two multilayer laue lenses

A zone plate multilayer structure includes a substrate carrying a plurality of alternating layers respectively formed of tungsten silicide (WSi) and silicon (Si). The alternating layers are sequentially deposited precisely controlling a thickness of each layer from a minimum thickness of a first deposited layer adjacent the substrate to a maximum thickness of a last deposited layer. The first minimum thickness layer has a selected thickness of less than or equal to 5 nm with the thickness of the alternating layers monotonically increasing to provide a zone plate multilayer structure having a thickness of greater than 12 &#x3bc;m (microns). The x-rays are diffracted in Laue transmission geometry by the specific arrangement of silicon and tungsten silicide.

Method of making and structure of multilayer laue lens for focusing hard x-rays

A multifunctional hard x-ray nanoprobe instrument for characterization of nanoscale materials and devices includes a scanning probe mode with a full field transmission mode. The scanning probe mode provides fluorescence spectroscopy and diffraction contrast imaging. The full field transmission mode allows two-dimensional (2-D) imaging and tomography. The nanoprobe instrument includes zone plate optics for focusing and imaging. The nanoprobe instrument includes a stage group for positioning the zone plate optics. The nanoprobe instrument includes a specimen stage group for positioning the specimen. An enhanced laser Doppler displacement meter (LDDM) system provides two-dimensional differential displacement measurement in a range of nanometer resolution between the zone-plate optics and the sample holder. A digital signal processor (DSP) implements a real-time closed-loop feedback technique for providing differential vibration control between the zone-plate optics and the sample holder.
