Described herein are probiotics, more particularly [to] the probiotic yeast. Even more particularly described herein are enhanced probiotic potency. Also described here are mutant alleles useful to develop yeast strains with enhanced production of acetic acid. In addition, described here is the use of such yeast strains for the production of dietary supplements or pharmaceutical compositions to improve gastrointestinal comfort.

Means and methods to modulate probiotic potency of the yeast

The present invention relates to novel nucleic acid sequences encoding bacterial xylose isomerases that upon transformation of a eukaryotic microbial host cell, such as yeast, to confer to the host cell the ability of isomerising xylose to xylulose. The nucleic acid sequences encode xylose isomerases that originate from bacteria such assp.,and others. The invention further relates to fermentation processes wherein the transformed host cells ferment a xylose-containing medium to produce ethanol or other fermentation products.

Xylose isomerases that confer efficient xylose fermentation capability to yeast

The present invention relates to genes conferring acetic acid tolerance in yeast. More specifically, the invention relates to the use of DOT5, preferably in combination with CUP2 and/or HAA1 to obtain acid tolerance in yeast. Even more preferably, the invention relates to specific alleles of said genes, and to yeast strains comprising said specific alleles.

The disclosure relates to a specific yeast allele of KIN3 that is involved in maximal alcohol accumulation and/or in tolerance to high alcohol levels. Preferably, the alcohol is ethanol. In a preferred embodiment, this specific allele is combined with specific alleles of ADE1 and/or VPS70. More specifically, the disclosure relates to the use of these alleles for the construction and/or selection of high alcohol tolerant yeasts, by stacking of positive alleles, or the selection and construction of low alcohol producing yeasts by stacking of negative alleles.

The present disclosure relates to the identification of a QTL associated with high ethanol tolerance inspp. More specifically, it relates to specific alleles of MKT1 and APJ1 possibly combined with a specific allele of SWS2 that are important in obtaining a high ethanol tolerance inspp. It relates further to the use of such alleles in the construction of high ethanol tolerant strains, and the use of these alleles in screening for ethanol tolerance.

The disclosure relates to the use of a mutant SSK1 gene encoding a truncated ssk1 protein for the construction of a mutant yeast strain with decreased glycerol production, when compared to the wild-type strain. It relates further to the use of such strains for high-yield bioethanol production, especially in high osmotic media, or on cellulosic hydrolysates, where normal yeast strains do produce a significant amount of glycerol.

The present invention relates to a mutant NNK1 allele, especially a mutant carrying a mutation at position of amino acid 807 of the wild type sequence. The invention relates further to the use of said mutant allele to increase the fermentation rate in yeast, preferably in. The mutant allele is especially useful to increase the xylose to ethanol fermentation rate.

The present invention relates to the use of trehalose-6-phosphate synthase to modulate plant growth. More specifically, it relates to the use of a class II trehalose-6-phosphate synthase, comprising both a synthase and a phosphatase-like part to modulate plant growth. Preferably, the activity of trehalose-6-phosphate synthase is down-regulated to obtain an increased plant biomass yield.
