An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block defining a cylinder and a cylinder head mounted to the block. The cylinder head supplies air and fuel to the cylinder for combustion therein. The engine also includes an exhaust manifold operatively connected to the cylinder head and having first and second outlets configured to exhaust post-combustion gasses from the cylinder. The engine also includes a turbocharging system including a low-flow turbocharger driven by the post-combustion gasses from the first outlet to pressurize the airflow and a high-flow turbocharger driven by the post-combustion gasses from the second outlet. The turbocharging system also includes a flow control device for selectively directing the post-combustion gasses to the low-flow and high-flow turbochargers. The turbocharging system additionally includes a motor-generator to selectively assist the post-combustion gasses in driving either the low-flow or the high-flow turbocharger and generate electric current when driven via the subject turbocharger.

Turbocharging system with electric motor(s)

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block defining a cylinder, a cylinder head, and an exhaust manifold operatively connected to the cylinder head and configured to exhaust post-combustion gasses from the cylinder. The engine also includes a turbocharging system configured to pressurize an airflow for delivery thereof to the cylinder. The turbocharging system includes a low-flow turbocharger having a first turbine housing and a high-flow turbocharger having a second turbine housing. Each turbocharger is configured to be driven by the post-combustion gasses from the exhaust manifold in order to pressurize the airflow and discharge the pressurized airflow to the cylinder. The turbocharging system also includes a flow control device for selectively directing the post-combustion gasses to the low-flow and high-flow turbochargers. The turbocharging system additionally includes a cooling module configured to cool the second turbine housing. A vehicle employing such an engine is also disclosed.

Cooled two-stage turbocharging system

A powertrain includes a combustion chamber, an intake assembly, an exhaust manifold, and a pump. The combustion chamber is configured for combusting an air and fuel mixture. The intake assembly is configured to supply air to the combustion chamber. The exhaust manifold is configured to draw exhaust gas from the combustion chamber. The pump is operatively disposed between the intake assembly and the exhaust manifold such that the pump is in fluid communication with each of intake assembly and the exhaust manifold. The pump is configured to operate in a first mode to draw exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold and supply the exhaust gas to the intake manifold at a positive EGR flow rate such that exhaust gas is supplied to the combustion chamber.

Emission system and method of selectively directing exhaust gas and air within an internal combustion engine

A turbo compounding internal combustion engine system includes an internal combustion engine and one or more valves for controlling a flow of an exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. The system also includes a controller configured to monitor an operation mode of the internal combustion engine and responsively control the one or more valves and a turbine configured to selectively receive the exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine and to convert exhaust energy into a mechanical power. The system further includes a clutched gear drive selectively coupled to the turbine and the internal combustion engine, wherein the clutched gear drive is configured to provide the mechanical power generated by the turbine to the internal combustion engine.

Turbo compounding hybrid generator powertrain

An engine assembly includes a two-cylinder engine, an intake assembly, and an air-oil separator. The two-cylinder engine defines a first cylinder bore, a first combustion chamber, a second cylinder bore, a second combustion chamber, and a crankcase volume. The engine further includes a first piston disposed within the first cylinder bore, and a second piston disposed within the second cylinder bore. The intake assembly includes an intake manifold in fluid communication with each of the first and second combustion chambers, and the air-oil separator defines a separator volume and in fluid communication with each of the crankcase volume and the intake manifold. A reciprocal, synchronous motion of the first and second pistons is operative to exhale gas from the crankcase volume through the separator volume and into the intake manifold.
